Forums - Microsoft - [UPDATE] Microsoft Cannot Remotely Brick Your Xbox One

If these leakers signed a contract and broke it Microsoft could probably do a whole hell of a lot worse than this, I think they got off easy.

Yep. Sony did it to PS3 pirates last gen.

Moral of the story kiddos is dont pirate games on a console you connect to the internet, and dont break the NDA for an unannounced game :)

Souce? Because from what I know you can use forever your PS3 even after Sony ban it from PSN.

Where does it say their consoles are permanently unusable? I only see 'disable Xbox Live accounts'.

I even bolded the part

Microsoft decides on depending on the severity of the offense, their Xbox One is entirely unusable.

I don't know why your so shocked etho. Sony would have done the same thing. They broke the licence agreement, and thus they get punished. They should be happy Microsoft isn't taking legal action against them.

It is not what they did but what they can do.

It is against the law to make a product you brought unusable... you can ban / make unusable the services like PSN or Live but the console you can play retail games yet.

I'm pretty sure they were able to do this with the Xbox 360 and did with modders and such. Seemed to be rampant around the COD4/MW2 days when people would cheat via a modded Xbox 360. I'm pretty sure MS could brick these consoles too.

But how? It doesn't really say anything about what Microsoft did other than disable Xbox Live accounts. Why can't they just play offline? How did Microsoft stop that, did they even stop that?

I don't know how but they can and did from the Kotaku article.

"Yep, according to VMC, Microsoft has both permanently banned those leakers’ Xbox Live accounts and temporarily made their Xbox Ones totally unusable."

From what I see from my banned friends they could play offline just fine... the console works offline without any restriction except the online features.

Etho, they where beta testers. They got a game early so they could test it, not leak it to the general public. This isn't DRM, this broke an NDA, and they can be sued for doing this. So yes it is legal to this, and I think Microsoft's judgement is right. I would say the same thing if Sony did this.
