Forums - Nintendo - What do the recent Konami rumors mean for future Virtual Console support?

Well I don't know what's going on between Squeenix and Nintendo in the West these days. But something's wrong. The number of titles coming over have been seriously lacking. They've only released Deus Ex for WiiU as far as I know, and the 3DS isn't exactly getting a lot of support from them either, with all of their games (apart from Theatrhythm) having been published near the launch of the device and virtually no support in the West after that.

Also the Squeenix VC games HAVE been released on WiiU... in Japan. So it's not a question of having to port them anymore. They're simply not coming West for some or other reason.

If I would have to guess (and this is pure speculation) then the following is going on: Nintendo wants Squeenix to bring their Japanese games for 3DS and WiiU to the West (mostly Dragon Quest), but Square isn't willing to do that. So Nintendo uses the VC games as leverage. If Squeenix doesn't want to take any "risks" in the West on Nintendo platforms, Nintendo isn't going to hand them an easy way of making a quick buck in the West either by releasing their VC games for them.

Which of their VC games are out in Japan?

NES:

Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, Bubble Bobble (Taito), Elevator Action, Soft-boiled Hero, The Legend of Kage

SNES

Final Fantasy VI, Legend of the Holy Sword 2, Ogre Battle, Romancing Saga, Romancing Saga 2, Bahamut Lagoon, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V, Romancing Saga 3, Tactics Orgre, Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest

Last Squeenix game published on VC was The Legend of Kage on June 24th 2014. So that's almost a year ago since the last Squeenix game came out on VC in Japan as well. No GBA, no N64.

No Dragon Quest games?

Even so, that's insane.

To be fair they didn't release any N64 games and most of their GBA games are inferior ports of SNES games.

And just like that, I get my answer.

Thanks Konami. I hardly knew ye. (Seriously, I hardly knew you.)

No Dragon Quest. Those are exclusive for mobile (sigh)

And yeah, it's pretty astounding that none of these have come West.

You're (almost) right. There is that Ogre 64 game though, and KH: Chain of memories and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on GBA which were pretty fun.

Seems you have to buy original consoles and games

I can live without them in that case.

Why that? its great to play games on the device they were made for

It's better in every concievable way to play them all digitally in one modern device.  There is literally nothing worth owning old hardware for other then novelty, which quickly wears off.
