Forums - Nintendo - What do the recent Konami rumors mean for future Virtual Console support?

FYI if you plan to get MGS 3DS do it sooner rather than later (if you want a new copy). I recently
bought it and it was pretty difficult to find. Well worth it though! It's amazing what they managed to squeeze out
of the 3DS hardware, and the cart is a whopping 4GB in size, making it the biggest game ever on a cart. I have the original 3DS so a circle pad pro is a must, but if you have a new 3DS with a 2nd analog stick you're set.

I'm all digital, so "finding it" won't be an issue. It's only $20 on the eshop too. Pretty fair. I already have a CPP as well, so all that's left is getting the game.

Seeing how slow Ninten is with even updating their VC, it seems either way these games would never make it to VC, and that is sad... : ( The only way will probably be finding the games somewhere out there at a decent price...

It makes me wonder if Konami will pull even more of their games off VC later in the future...

I mean, Konami has been notoriously good about supporting the VC well.

Yeah, they have. They already have a good selection of games on there. Though I have heard they pulled a few games off from different digital stores, but not nearly as bad as other companies, haha....

Seems you have to buy original consoles and games

I was wondering whether it is actually Konami who makes the VC port? I think I read somewhere (but can't remember where; probably in another thread here) that Nintendo does all VC porting itself and that they have an agreement with the publisher on whom gets what share.

That's supposedly the reason why we're not getting SNES games anymore. Not because some publishers aren't interested in releasing any more SNES games on VC, but because Nintendo has moved on to porting from other systems because SNES games don't sell that hot (for that price) and GBA & N64 games do.

So I think that as long as Konami IS in the games business, we will be getting VC releases of their games. Or at least as long as they have some form of contract with Nintendo which means that they don't have to do much work, and will bear the fruits of these rereleases. Who knows, there may come a day that we'll see Legacy of Darkness released on VC (here's hoping!)

Dude I'm glad you brought this up. I have been pounding the table for Virtual Console Release for The Goonies II on the NES. By far one my favorite games of all time. I hope they let Nintendo port any games now for cheaper prices on the VC.

I can live without them in that case.

It's obviously more complicated than that, or we'd have all the missing Square and Enix games.

First Sega move away from console development, then Capcom start focusing more on mobile now Konami want to exit gaming?

People really think the industry is in good shape?

So what Im getting from this is.... their all japanese gameing developers that dont make RPGs.... and theyre all in trouble.

Coincidence? I think not!

More JRPGs for everyone :)

(the irony is that RPGs are really well suited for mobile as well.... since touch screen controllers suck donkey balls, you dont want to play fps type games on them)

Well I don't know what's going on between Squeenix and Nintendo in the West these days. But something's wrong. The number of titles coming over have been seriously lacking. They've only released Deus Ex for WiiU as far as I know, and the 3DS isn't exactly getting a lot of support from them either, with all of their games (apart from Theatrhythm) having been published near the launch of the device and virtually no support in the West after that.

Also the Squeenix VC games HAVE been released on WiiU... in Japan. So it's not a question of having to port them anymore. They're simply not coming West for some or other reason.

If I would have to guess (and this is pure speculation) then the following is going on: Nintendo wants Squeenix to bring their Japanese games for 3DS and WiiU to the West (mostly Dragon Quest), but Square isn't willing to do that. So Nintendo uses the VC games as leverage. If Squeenix doesn't want to take any "risks" in the West on Nintendo platforms, Nintendo isn't going to hand them an easy way of making a quick buck in the West either by releasing their VC games for them.
