Yep just like in Mario Kart 8, except you can't spectate if a battle is currently in progress which is unfortunate, but there's always Squid Jump. :L

Hoping Pro Controller support is added in the August update. Can't be hard to make the squid jumps work without the touchscreen.

How? As said we can't choose teams nor can we guarantee random players wont take up spots. We have to wait until August before tournaments can happen.
