Am I the only one genuinely worried for Monolith Soft? I think this game had a pretty big budget and it selling this low isn't a good sign no. I really hope they keep making JRPGs, we need more.

It likely didn't have a massive budget. The game has almost no  advertisment and they mentioned multiple times that there were budget constraints. If it sells 1 million (which if it follows the pattern of Xenoblade Chronicles it should) then it will likely make a revenue betwen $40-50 million. A game like this probably would have cost $20 mil to produce as Nintendo is a very budget pinching company. It shows if you read Tachikoma's analysis as well.

Well we don't know the exact amount but a open world game as big as Xenoblade, i would say it has a pretty big budget, not 50+ million but big.

Also, it's not making $40-$50 million in revenues, the only way that would happen is if it sold 1 million for $60 and we know that isn't going to happen.

I think it will sell better in the west but not by that much. I don't think Nintendo will even advertise this game in the west and if they, it won't be that much.

They said they were on a strict budget in Iwata Asks.

Anyway, I would like to see other games than rpgs from them.

I hope not, we're barely getting any real jrpgs and I hope they keep making them.

Being an open world game doesn't automatically increase budget. Sure you have to create a lot of assets for an open-world game, but this game shows efficient usage of a low number of assets in certain situations. Furthermore, it has no CGI cutscenes and very minute pre-rendering at all, so the costs of said assets aren't very large. $20 million seems very reasonable of an estimate, as other AAA games such as The Witcher, Witcher 2, Dead Space, Gears of War, Bioshock, Heavenly Sword, etc had similar budgets to this even after massive advertisement costs, and it was when HD development was at its most expensive.

$60*100k (digital) + $45*900k (retail) = $46.5 million. Nintendo never really drops prices until after the games are done selling, if at all.

$60*1,000,000 would be $60 million.

I expected at least 90k for XCX but it's good to see it came really close to that, maybe with digital it goes up to 90k.

Decent Wii U and PS4 numbers and kinda disappointing 3DS numbers.

Golden Week? Apart from the Wii U numbers which are most likely due to the release of 2 big new games, this looks just like an average week, During December Media Create usually has far higher numbers.
From henceforth Golden Week shall be known as Tin Week

Media Create software figures do not include Dragon Quest X for Wii.

That's weird, I guess they justsaid "It's a game for an almost 9 years-old console so it doesn't matter" or maybe it was just a mistake XD

No, I thought a JRPG like Xenoblade would sell a lot more, this game is rare, it's one of the closest games we will get that remind us of RPGs during the PS1/PS2 era. I hope that made sense lol.

Like I said, the Japanese only buy their already established rpgs.

can you tell me why japanese developers keep making most of their jrpgs for nippon only? i find very odd that JRPGS only sell well in the western, yet they decide not to bring us their games for some reason...

Do those games sell? I checked the top 200 best selling RPGs and with the exception of Pokémon, FF and DQ the vast majority were wrpgs.

And unless I'm wrong Pokémon isn't defined as a jrpg.

Pokemon is quite a standard JRPG with some unique features. Turn-based combat with random encounters, linear story progression, micro-management, etc, etc. A lot of people forget about it though and often say Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are the two largest JRPG's when, in fact, Pokemon is bigger than both.

I agree with your main point though. Any JRPG that is mainstream tends to appeal more to the West than Japan, with the exception of Dragon Quest.

Yeah, I thought there were certain rules for something to be considered a jrpg, but apparently the only rule is that it has to come from Japan. My bad.

Pokémon is a beast though, it occupies the first 9 spots lol!
