Do those games sell? I checked the top 200 best selling RPGs and with the exception of Pokémon, FF and DQ the vast majority were wrpgs.

And unless I'm wrong Pokémon isn't defined as a jrpg.

Pokemon is quite a standard JRPG with some unique features. Turn-based combat with random encounters, linear story progression, micro-management, etc, etc. A lot of people forget about it though and often say Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are the two largest JRPG's when, in fact, Pokemon is bigger than both.  

I agree with your main point though. Any JRPG that is mainstream tends to appeal more to the West than Japan, with the exception of Dragon Quest.
