Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Adding Blu Ray Support!!!

disolitude said:
The whole idea behind the need for bluray is the reason why Wii is the number one console right now.

While i'm sure MGS4 will be awesome, we are treading on excess at this point when it comes to budgets, game size and development time. It would be hillarious if MGS4 gets outsold by something like Carnival Games.

I am going to use a car analogy.

Toyota and Porsche both make great cares. Both companies are outstanding.

Toyota sells a lot more cars, and spends a lot less money making them. Does that mean the market that wants a Porsche should not exist? Does that mean Porsche should close its doors because they cannot compete with Toyota? No.

There is a market for MGS4, and it will be outsold by a much cheaper game. That does not mean it should not be made. It’s just a different audience.

And I am not putting the Wii down with this analogy. I own a Wii and a Toyota. Incidentally, I also own a PS3 and a Porsche. :)

@kingofwale, i use rogers too and have a nice Download and upload speed and i live in Ontario. I pay $45 before tax and whatever else they charge and when i download off the PS3 or good a internet site i can get over 800kb/s.

Maybe you should phone rogers and tell them to come fix your internet, they should have a guy out to your place in no time.

About 15 years ago PCs were considered a nice to have...

About 10 years ago the Internet was a nice to have...

About 5 years ago most people still had film cameras...

Now, Internet social and knowledge networks are huge like Facebook, My Space, Blogger, Wikipedia, etc...

What makes everyone believe that in 5 years digital downloads would not be the only and best way to get media? Just a what if scenario... What if satellites provided Internet access faster without the need for wiring? Both Japanese and American companies have plans that have been forming for over a decade on satellite Internet access at a low cost. And as for wanting a blu-ray disc or whatever, will it matter if the copyright owners refuse to distribute physical media?

Point is, I have been in the technology world for a while, and no one can see the next five years and nay say any prediction. To do so is wrong... Think more about what could or would need to happen to make it possible. I thought browsers were a waste of time in '92... Now, I feel they are a needed tool that I don't want to be without. I would have thought people in these forums knew that more than others but I guess I am wrong.

I doubt many people want to waste their bandwidth on a 20GB+ download. It just isn't practical. With a basic highspeed connection(768k), it would take a while to download an HD movie unless it's dumbed down quality of it...but then what is the point of downloading HD if you want the details and everything?

Another point...hard drives run out of space! This puts a limit on how many movies you can have. While with a physical format, it's cheap to mass produce it and you can have as many HD movies as you want without a limit. Storage space plays a big factor in that.

Where are you from in Ontario? I don't know, for a PS3 firmware update, it took me ALL NIGHT! I have henced stopped downloading PS3 demos, man, it's killing me.

I have called Rogers tons of times, and got the same answers... It's not anything wrong with their side, it's just the normal speed here in Toronto.

yeah, who cares about world hunger, Let's get those high-speed broadband first.

I doubt you will even have broadband fast enough to download movies in Canada in 5 years. I'm still paying 40 bucks a month with actual download speed of close to 70kb/s

Man...you are getting ripped off. Rogers or Bell?

Rogers. Being throttled hard doing anything. Even ITune downloads, I have to suffer from about 6kb/s download speed at night. That's why I can't even load VGC pages sometimes.

Also, I have a quota of about 40gb per month, so 2 blu-ray movie download a month

It's f***ing ridiculous.

And don't get me started on Mobile plans here in this country

Wow, that's pretty bad. That's one thing I like about Japan, cheap broadband. In my apartment I have a Fiber Optical connection that I pay ~$35 (US) for. I'm not sure about the actual speeds, but the fastest I've dl/ul has been about 6MB/4MB (yes, that is Megabytes, not bits). My old ADSL connection in the US was slooooow compared to this and might have cost more I think...

^ Really? Because I get 1.5mbps download speed.....Do you play online games??? If you do, is it any good?

 was that for me?

Considering I have problems desplaying websites at night. No, I don't play online games. It's not that I don't want to, it's that I can.

And no, I will NOT pay 60 bucks+ a  month for the higher  priced internet package.

What's possible, and what will me mainstream are two different things. Music Downloads (A much better idea then movie or game downloads) has been going for well over 5 years. The experts expect Music Downloads to surpass CD's in 2012. That's just getting to 50%... it 12 years. To claim that adding support for the next generation of optical media to Vista is unimportant, and will be obsolete in 5 years, is just a load of crap.

Sorry, there is no other way to see it. In fact if optical mead was so dead, why did MS spend hundreds of millions of dollars trying to keep HD-DVD going? It’s only now “dead” because they lost. Show some dignity and just add the damn driver. No need for the bad mouthing of Sony’s format.
