Forums - Sony - Do Developers Understand The PS3 Now ?

Finally some superior PS3 multiplatform titles have been released with Devil May Cry 4, Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed, Burnout Paradise, Oblivion. The next multiplatform Ps3 titles will be on par or better than the XBox 360 version: Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Grand Theft Auto 4. Some good PS3 exclusives are out in 2008: Metal Gear Solid 4, GT5 Prologue, Little Big Planet, Reistance 2 and Kill Zone 2.
Developers are getting their act together and now understand the PS3.

I takes years to really get the most out of a system as we saw with the PS2. I'm only just starting to get the most out of Z80 on the CPC after over 20 years. Writing good multi-threaded code is even harder, and that's required to get the most out of the X360 or any multi-core CPU.

The PS3 is another concept altogether because to get the most out of the SPUs requires very clever design due to the totally separate SPU cores with their own memory and a fast bus which links the SPUs and CPU in a specific order (eg. It's much faster to get SPU0 to send data to SPU1 than the other way around).

I would think most developers would initially find it hard to come to grips with the design, but would get a great sense of achievement when they get the code really working and start to build more powerful SPU libraries. SPUs are general purpose and can do fast maths, branch, call etc. They are well suited to AI.

Agreed and it's worth noting these multi-platform games which are as good as on par are also the technically most demanding multi-platform games. Oblivion on the PS3 is far better than the 360 version though and Berthesda have only been scratching the surface of what can be accomplished on the PS3. (Just read my sig)

I wouldn't say Assasin's Creed was better on the 360 from what I've heard. Even playing it had a somewhat choppy frame rate on the PS3.

The topic is : Do Developers Understand The PS3 Now ?

My answer would be yes.

Burnout Paradise is a good example. The lead console for development was PS3. And it looked really good. And the Xbox360 version looked good, too. Maybe with a lower resolution (can't really tell), but still good.

Before, conventional wisdom may have guided developers to produce games on the XBox360 first, then the PS3, because the 360 could be the "weaker" machine. Porting it to the more "powerful" machine would be easier later.

But it turns out, that is not the case. Just look at EA sports game before.

While the PS3 is technically more powerful, graphics-wise, the Xbox360 on the other hand is more flexible, mainly because of the 360's PC roots. I guess the Burnout model should be the one followed by developers-- as it produces the best possible results for both consoles.

Maybe conventional wisdom *is* right. Develop on the "weaker" machine first, then to the more "powerful" one. But this time, power is not equated to graphical power, but programming flexibility.

As developers learn more of the PS3, the 360 version may lose on the screen resolution and some polycount, but I don't think it will be a big deal except for nitpickers. Good versions for both machines is good for everyone, right?

Yes/No ...

Being that most developers will be focused on cross platform development between the XBox 360 and PS3, most developers understand the PS3 well enough that they can match the performance of the XBox 360 and don't care about much beyond that.

Developers working on big budget exclusive PS3 games may continue fighting with the system to get further perfomance out of the system, potentially at the expense of delays.

This is pretty much how I see it. Developers are comfortable enough with the PS3 that they can match the performance of 360 games without too much trouble. They could probably do some stuff on the PS3 that narrowly exceeds what the 360 can do, but it would be horribly slow and expensive.

PS3 sales being what they are, this will probably translate into most games on the HD consoles being almost completely identical multiplats, with a handful of extremely impressive first party exclusive, as well as the few huge third party projects that are most likely too far specialized on the PS3 to go multiplat (MGS4, FF13).
