Forums - Politics - Why cant we just have Religion and Atheism live in Harmony?

I believe in tricks, not magic. I believe that the brain can translate a lot of things that don't actually exist, hence why things like mirages, addiction, and optical illusions take place. I believe in things that are backed not by the human brain alone but also through the help of general observational science, as opposed to a book written 3500 years ago that explains alot of things (that are now debunked by science) that eventually led to the ever-so-useful 'god of the gaps' arguement. I digress.

I would not talk like this in front of a religiuos person because it may start a heated conversation but it is how I feel. I live in harmony with a couple of religious people and when they talk about religion I just sort of listen as opposed to argue it.

So the answer is we can live in harmony, it just depends on whether the individual is attracted to drama or not.

So the way to live in harmony is by never challenging anyone? Never voicing your opinion? Wouldn't it be better to learn how to discuss these things in a civilized manner rather than simply opting out of the conversation all together?

Because religious people are a half glass full group where they want everyone to think that is the right answer and atheists are glass half empty people where they realise that no matter how you spin it the reality of the situation is that they got less to drink than when the glass was full, unless they top up.

Be that as it may, this thread of yours is actually a perfect example to your question.

You did a great job, brother.

I think you quoted the wrong person because I never said don't ever challenge anyone or don't voice your opinion.

But if you did quote me on purpose then I guess you have never heard of the quote, "It takes two to tango". What that means is when two people are conversing, its not up to an individual to keep the pace of a conversation or to keep things civilized, it depends on the other person and how adamant they are on their beliefs AS WELL as yourself. It's something I personally love to discuss with people who share my same understanding of the fundamentals of life. I typically don't bother conversing in an opposing fashion against someone's genuine belief unless I can learn from them when talking about topics that I have yet to hear. Otherwise, its your typical repeated conversation, which I have had A LOT of in my lifetime. So you can stop your sarcasm.

To live in harmony is to be respectful and know who your discussing a conversation with, especially with religious conversatoins which, traditionally, can escalate. Its easy to say to yourself to keep things civilized but that also depends on the other person as well. Its good to voice your opinion, its better to know who your voicing it towards. Your welcome.

So any idea that you don't like is a "religion".  lol.  WHat nonsense.

yup, what you said is total nonsense, I agree.  lol

religion is an organized collection of beliefs and forcing it on people is wrong

Apparently you weren't being sarcastic.  You can call whatever you want a religion, doesn't make it so.

It seems to me that the media just creates this sort of anti-religious hysteria and the Authoritarian Left would just love it if religion disappeared altogether and people just worshipped their leaders and the state

Anyway, I have plenty of atheist and agnostic friends.  I am quite orthodox but I don't preach to them, I don't hide it either.  I appreciate it if they respect my beliefs though, I don't appreciate my faith being insulted but I won't get butt mad over it either.

Here's my thing in a nutshell: no one should force religion on another person, and I use the term loosely.  Religion could be your political beliefs that are based on faith and faith alone, it could be some sort of fringe agenda, or it could just be a regular old organized religion.  If people abided by that I think we could get along much better.

Wow, watch Fox much?  That's some crazy conspiracy crap your spewing.  The religious right have been attempting to force their agenda on everyone through the guise of "religious freedom" for a long time.
