Frankly I think it is a great marketing move. They make tons from used games particularly brand new ones, and those are the one they have the fewest of so viola. I wouldn't be surprised if they started offereing this for more games. Those of you with stores that so this already enjoy. This costs them no more than giving out a coupon with your reserve offering $5 off your next purchase of $60. So they are selling $120 worth of product for $115.
This is not ruining the gaming industry, if gamestop didn't do it that would be just more stuff on ebay or craigslist. Gamestop just makes it easy and takes a piece.
The used game scene is very big in Japan. Sometimes for short games it will really hurt sales. Dragon Quest Swords sold out its first week but was so short that as second and third shipment rolled in demand has slackened because of the glut of used copies.
If companies wanted to combat this they make their games so gamers want to hold onto them. Great multiplayer online like Call of Duty, additional content warranting more replay like Mario Galaxy, continuing worlds like Animal Crossing, user created content like Little Big Planet, or just overall hugeness like Lost Odyssey or Oblivion. I have no idea why anyone would be upset if developers made games worth holding on to.
Final* Word on Game Delays:
The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.
Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.
Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.
