Forums - Sony - Sony’s 2015 Blu-ray players get PlayStation Now streaming

Pretty soon, you might not need to get your hands on a PS3 if you don't own one yet just to play

Pretty soon, you might not need to get your hands on a PS3 if you don't own one yet just to play its exclusive titles. Sony seems to be keen on adding support for its PlayStation Now game streaming services to devices outside of its own gaming hardware. Now the Japanese company is announcing that the 2015 model of its Blu-ray Disc Player is getting that feature as well, allowing owners to rent and stream their desired PlayStation 3 games right in their living room, without having to own a PS3.

The last to get this treatment was interestingly not a Sony product. Last December, Sony surprisingly revealed that Samsung's 2015 line of Smart TVs will also be getting that game streaming feature. Considering Sony has its own Smart TV business, the move was akin to it sharing a piece of its kingdom with a rival. Of course, for Samsung Smart TV would-be owners, that's a very welcome arrangement.

That said, game streaming isn't the end all and be all of gaming. At least not yet. While it does relieve you of having to worry about download times and disk space, you do have to worry constantly about Internet connections. And some gamers would also prefer to own a game out of principle rather than renting one, which is practically what PlayStation Now offers. At the moment, the collection boasts of about 300 PS3 games, not exactly all of them but still quite a lot.

With the addition of this service, the 2015 Blu-ray player becomes and even more well-rounded entertainment equipment. Aside from this new PlayStation Now feature, the box is also able to, of course, play Blu-ray discs, stream videos from popular services like Netflix, and even cast photos and videos from Android devices.

... was it the PS4?

Hmm, pie.

Awesome to hear, slowly moving along adding support to more and more devices.
I wonder how many years away from your smart TV streaming the newest releases the day they come out via PS Now.

Its already on smart TV's i believe? but I think itll eventually make its way to PC.  Would be great if they released new releases on there as well

I mean new games though, like say streaming Uncharted 4 on release day on your smart TV. Obviously I think we are still years away, just wondering if we will see it before we see a PS5.

And it will likely make its way to PC eventually, I mean the idea is to hit as many potential customers as possible.

It will never come to PC unless sony stops its hardware business. It may come to Mobile but not PC soon.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

Especially it will be on Samsung's SmartTVs. Gotta go with the ones that actually sell TVs. In the end, they have to reach as much users as possible to make as much money off it as possible. So making PSNow exclusive to only Sony hardware is a potential failure. They should target users that don't own and don't want to buy Sony hardware.

PC is the most logical.  Theyre already putting it on Samsung TV's

Sony could care less if it is their own hardware if it is making them money.

Thats probably still 10 years ahead in the future. Since th bandwith needs to increase to stream newer gen games with higher resolutions. I dont think we will see a revolution in bandwith across the globe to the point it can match what a local machine can do. I expect by the time PS5 comes out we might have PS Now match PS4 games natively.
