We know that Mortal Kombat X on PlayStation platforms is region locked – meaning you’re only able to play multiplayer games with those in the same geographical location as you. For a fighting game, I have no problem with this – the latency when playing with people far away is terrible. Unfortunately, it seems to be in the game’s code, and not filtered by IP or ping. Reports suggest that buying the digital copy of the game from US PSN servers means you’re stuck playing the game’s multiplayer with Americans.
In a post on NeoGAF, a UK user explains his woes. He purchases a cheaper US copy, only to find he’s unable to play the game with his friends.
“So i live in UK got the game from the US psn as the prices here are just crazy,” says Nuszka“Not only you cannot play cross region but the digital copy is locking me to the US servers, why does it not check my ip address.”
“So all i am getting are semi bad connections. Tried setting a private match with a friend from EU – it does not work even though we live in the same region our MKX copies are preventing us from connecting. NetherRealm just to remind you we live in 2015. Best of all this feature is exclusive to PS4.”
It’s something that could easily be patched, I presume – but it’s worth a warning. Don’t buy the game from outside of your region if you’re playing on PlayStation platforms. While it affects the digital copies, we’re unsure if the same lock is in place with physical ones, If it is, it means those of you who’ve imported the otherCollector’s edition may not be able to play the game online with your friends. It sucks – but you can’t say you weren’t warned.
