Forums - Gaming - We need to bring back the era of demos

Should we bring back demos in the new gen?

Yes! I hate waiting for reviews! 34 72.34%

No! Surprise me so I can return it! 10 21.28%

Demo this D 3 6.38%

I like rentals so ha...I always win 0 0%

Total:47

I do enjoy demos, but I can rent games and watch videos on YouTube. At this point I pretty well know what games I enjoy.

For me, it is all about expanding my horizons. During PSU days they would have all those different demos packed onto the same disc and I know that even today with the abundance of coverage I wouldn't research all those games on my own. Demo discs allowed me to experience all these different games firsthand and many of the purchases I made would not have happened without PSU. I commend Kojima and Tabata for releasing demoes of FFXV and Silent Hills and I think it is something that game developers have to start doing again

Demos are not even a good thing when you have companies like Ubisoft showing off Watch Dogs and AC Unity with better performance and better visuals on the demo than on the final game.

Question is whether those demos were playable to the public. Showcases are one thing and they also warned us about the Order.

So dishonesty is the best policy. Its amazing how the world works. I actually purchased more because of rentals and demos.

Referring to the lack of demos as "dishonesty" is a little over the top, don't you think? There are also more reasons why demos can hurt sales other than the game being of lacking quality.

Transparency is what demos give. The industry needs more of it. It forces devs to up their quality.

What is your primary motivator for a purchase?

Personal Interest followed by reviews/scores!

So if its a genre/franchise that I like, that will be my first checkmark cause I won't really care for games like Bread Simulator even if that were to get high scores and then reviews/scores. I mostly use Metacritic cause I don't really trust the opinion of any single reviewer since many have different tastes so metacrtic just jumbles them all up into one number to show where the game might land in terms of consensus. Its not a perfect system but there isn't much of an alternative

So essentially status quo. Interesting. I have been thinking about new systems  of doing things, but i'll keep that to myself so I could probably use it to help gaming if possible for marketing purposes.

Demos are almost universally bad for business so I don't see that happening any time soon.

Dammit beat me to it. Posting this video into "Where are all the demos?" threads is all I got in life :(
At least I can embed it for you.

Well stealthily getting your game into gamers hands is more favorable than them seeing things at face value.

Demos are not face value. Unless I read your sentence wrong.

I'm an extremely patient guy. I can wait days, months and years for a game(with the exception of very few). Thus, I can watch youtube videos, reviews, let's plays, get the heads up from like minded friends and read about it on forums like this one to find out if it's right for me. Alternatively, I used to use Gamefly.

Why limit yourself?  The more exposure the better.

So...I guess its not a demonstration of a stage of development?
