Personally I liked the Captain Toad levels in 3D World, but not enough to buy a game based solely on them, whereas I very much enjoyed Rainbow Curse, but admittedly it may not be worth $40 if you don't plan on 100%'ing it, though in my case the free amiibo made it a good deal regardless.
Since I dont own any of the two, my opinion counts double.
I would go with the captain.

Definitely go with captain toad, Kirby isn't bad but I personally enjoyed toad much more and I got a lot more playtime out of it.
Captain Toad all the way. I hated Rainbow curse and my wife (who sucks at games) beat it in one sitting.

Captain toad, no question about it. Especially if you've played super Mario 3d world! The games surprisingly long as well for only $40
