Before we start, let's make it clear two things: first dark =/= mature, secondly, dark doesn't have to be linked strictly to dark graphics.

So, let's begin. (This thread may contain spoilers)

There are times when Nintendo decides to go with some dark themes in their games. For example in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, the Hyrule Kingdoom that was saved by the Hero of Time whom have to travel between past and future, had to be flooded by the gods when Ganon returns and the Hero of Time didn't appear as he embarcks in a new adventure.

In the Metroid series, as we have an overall dark tone, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is one of the finest examples. Going literally to hell, Samus has to travel to the Dark Aether transdimensional planet, where even the atmosphere hurts. There, you have to go with caution and praying for light crystals to help in your quest. Unfortunately, you will find other horrors in your way like the Ings screams, dark powerful beasts.

The Paper Mario series is not out of this. In the Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door we have a fight against Peach. But that's just one of the elements. As Peach disembarcks in Rogueport, a town full of bandits, we have to go in a quest to unseal a millenium witch who posseses Peach's body. Who would have tought?

Maybe Fire Emblem If will make this kind of list...

Probably the next Metroid.

Maybe. That series have a lot of potential. Recently finished Echoes, I won't be mad for a direct sequel.

My favorite Metroid, it gets better the more you play it. :p

I definitely want to see a dark Metroid. Mix some stealth (zero mission) and survival horror elements into the mix.

I can see why. I'm again playing the Trilogy. Started with 2, then 3 and finally 1. 2 is way superior to 3 and in my opinion as good as the first one.

The thing is, that Echoes feels sometimes like a survival horror game. It's truly scary.

SSB was dark, I mean you got to play as Dark Pit, I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.

I'd love a new Eternal Darkness.

Yes. This game have that vibe. Even in the trailer the Nohr parts feels dark.
