First of all the game runs at 720p with no anti aliasing, so it's easy to understand why it runs so smoothly.
PS4 and Xbox One have much more power but all of that goes to "waste" going up to full hd and implementing all manner of GPU/CPU effects like AF, MSAA, SMAA, AO and other stuff.
I have always felt that developers need to stop cramming all these new GPU and CPU tech into their games, and use all the extra power for more innovative gameplay.

Isn't it 1080p? And no AA? Have i missed something?

We have never gotten any details on that as far as I know. I don't see why it wouldn't be 720p though.
If you're interested in Nintendo content and understand german, maybe you want to take a look at my youtube channel! :)

"Unfortunately, image quality isn't quite as impressive with Nintendo targeting an expected 1280x720 without any sort of anti-aliasing to smooth out the edges."
Yep. 720p.

Read the actual Digital Foundry review. They talk about how it's only 720p with no anti-aliasing and say it's disappointing.

Oh, well. Atleast it's 60fps.

LBP3 isn't a particularly great example, because Sumo/XDev do deserve to be 'blasted' for its performance/instability. It had one of the smallest visual bumps of any cross-gen title we've seen, yet was barley able to maintain its 1080p/30fps target (that had already been cut from 1080p/60fps). It was in rather obvious need of more development time.

I think its great its running at 720p 60fps instead of 1080p 30fps as Splatoon will benefit more from 60fps than 1080p, plus like MK8, the gameplay is quite hectic so I doubt you will constantly recognize the resolution.

Splatoon might not be a huge graphical showcase (even for the WiiU), but it's not so 'simple' that getting it to run at a near perfect 60fps would be easy. Even while rendering at 1280x720 it will likely have taken a decent amount of effort on Nintendo's part (and they deserve praise for ensuring that target was properly met).
