Forums - Gaming - I hate "QUICK PRESS THIS BUTTON!" games.

I'm talking about games where some kind of "cutscene" plays that removes you from the normal game controls, and then a message pops up that says "press X" or something, and you have to do it quickly or fail your current task/die. Is there anything else in video gaming that's more immersion-breaking than the game telling you exactly what to do? Imagine you're trying to slay a monstrous dragon, you climb up onto its neck and prepare to plunge your sword into the base of its skull, and a huge floating message appears in front of you that says "Press X" (if you prefer, a loud booming voice can say it instead).

Also, I thought games were supposed to be about skill. You learn the controls and then use them to position your character and wait for the right moment to attack the boss's weak point for maximum damage. Not the game moving your character for you, then announcing "THIS IS THE RIGHT MOMENT, PRESS THIS BUTTON TO WIN." That relegates the player to the same mental level as a 2-year-old trying to figure out that the round peg goes into the round hole.

Games I've played recently that are guilty of treating me like a 2-year-old and ruining any sense of immersion I may have had:

Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles
God of War
Final Fantasy VIII (the train mission)

it adds more tension to the game, cause you have to keep paying attention

It was really bad in the Wii version of RE4 when you would see the Wiimote shaking back and forth trying to tell you to run. I can laugh for hours watching that, because it looks so damn stupid.

I think it is good when tastefully done. It can make cutscenes more interesting too. Too many games have tried to incorporate it though, I agree.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Well games like Zack & Wiki had a couple of those aswell. For me I don't really mind it too much, but I don't like developers act like this option is the right way of making games more diffcult (for the people that want to have some challenging games)

It seems Capcom loves this feature.

COD4 does it too, take the start for example when you must jump in the helicopter.

I love those things lol

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of it. I remembered playing MGS and during the cut scenes I'd put the controller down and just enjoy the little movies. Then I played GoW after completing MGS. During a cutscene I'd just put the controller down only to pounce on it like a freakin lion trying to hit the damn buttons, lol. Ever since playing GoW and RE4 I'm always at the ready during cutscenes.

I agree, but only if its implemented properly.
I was blown away when I got to the part where Nariko had to fight the King's Son in a coliseum in "Heavenly Sword".
The "quick press" event on that battle was so well implemented that I was actually tense myself.

Uncharted had it a couple times, seemed to worked alright.

I didn't mind it in God of War either, but found it pretty annoying in Heavenly Sword.

In games that consistently do it like God of War or RE4 I can understand it but still not really like it but then there are games like Uncharted that do it 5 time in the whole game and I just hate it.

I generally hate them because I really want to watch the cut scenes that people put a lot of work in but I'm too afraid of missing the next button press so I always miss them.
