Forums - PC Discussion - CPU help

Hi everyone:

My CPU has recently been getting very hot while gaming. My CPU is older, but I have not been playing any CPU intensive games. So my questions are: is there a problem with my CPU, do I need a new one, do I maybe need to reapply some thermal paste.

Other info.

PC was built 3.5 years ago, Heatsink fan is still working

CPU is i-5 2500k(it is NOT overclocked)

Used thermal paste that came pre-applied

Case is dust free

Have never had any problems with CPU temps until now

Used to idle at around 32C now around 40C or so

Game example: Diablo 3 would never get above 72C, last time I played it went up over 90C

Any other questions, let me know. Thanks in advance for the help!

Could be that the thermal paste has run its course...

I would check to see how fast the fan is spinning before reapplying thermal paste. If the fan is spinning slower than normal under heavy load, then you may have to replace it altogether but if the fan is fine, then yea, reapply the thermal paste and see if it improves. The easiest way to check ur fan speed is to install speedfan and run prime 95

are you using the boxed fan or another?

The fan that came with the CPU. I know they are not the greatest, but like I said, it has never given me any trouble before.

Does it make any kind of buzzing noise?

After 3 and a half years you should really replace your thermal paste. Check if the cooler is still spinning correctly, I'd suggest investing in an after market one. But get new thermal paste that should resolve your issues if not then it's with the cooler hopefully. But I doubt it's the CPU.

No, no strange noises at all.

they like to break after a while, because they are realy cheaply made.

do you hav other fans in your PC? or build in something recently?  had some problems after i got a new hdd, had to change the place of it because it blocked the air flow a lot.

Id reseat the CPU cooler, new paste, etc. My 2500k was running quite hot and it turned out to be the backplate was a little loose, probably due to all the heat cycles over the years.
