The employee at Gamestop told me that the fail rate is at 3-5%

And who told him that?

Completely joking

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.

Send your console to Sony, I'd complain like hell if I were you.

This is not a hardware deffect it is The optical Lens getting dirty and needing to have the dust removed. One could easly fix that themselves if it they do not care about the warrenty. You can not but maybe temporarly fix rrod.

But the truth is, it just doesn't work, whether it's from overheating or dust. Having to send your console back in to repair is the same.

Of course, you can fix RRoD, it won't be easy and it will void your warranty also. All I'm saying is, whether Microsoft is being treated unfairly when it comes to defected console issue.

The hatred (I believe) comes from Microsoft knowing about the problem and caring more about getting the system released then the quality. Nintendo discovered the problem while making brawl.

Microsoft has a history of bad customer relations
Nintendo has a history of good
X-box had a ton of problems as well
The gamecube you could roll down the stairs and it still worked

Microsoft make windows and has misplaced hate from that as well.

 ^ This.

And my launch Wii plays Brawl just fine, btw.

>And my launch Wii plays Brawl just fine, btw.

That's good. I need to ask RCTJunkie if he has a Launch Wii.

Man, putting myself in the shoe, if I get FFXIII (probably import from Japan) and it tells me not only I can't play it, I will also lose my console for 4-6 weeks for cleaning, I'd be so fricking pissed.

Nintendo's problem is due to manufacturing oversight in the first initial launch of Wiis. So far it is only a problem for one game.

Microsofts problem is due to a chronic trend of poor R&D, first improper chips, then later the proper chips but improper connections and mountings. Now some people are calling to attention the possible danger of HDDs in the Elites. Let us also forget the completely unadressed issue of a lacking component in the 360's disc tray which would secure the disc when the console is being moved.

Both problems are similar in certain respects though the range of the problems present on both console, their nature, reason for being there and degree of arguable negligence on the part of the manufacturer varies greatly.

There is in fact a legitimate and stimulating discussion lying within this subject and the presented comparison, though how the OP ever intened to achieve such with such a vague introduction is questionable.

I have my own theories as to what motives could possibly lie behind this thread, though voicing them would do little more than incite flamming.

 Awesome REPLY!!!

although the last sentence might revoke more flaming than if you had said what you wanted to say. ;)

Pretty much what I wanted to say, except after about 100 posts of me being flamed. lol

so you do admit there is a known problem that affects a least a few people? Enough for them to issue a semi recall for all units effected by it?

Hence why I asked why there's such a lack of reaction. I know I can never prove how many actual units are bugged by this, just like I can't prove how many 360 units got RRoD.

but the known fact is, there is a problem to begin with.

This must be the 10th time I'm saying this, and it will be my last.

Nobody is denying that there is a known problem. Nintendo immediately admitted that there is one and offered to fix it for free for the people affected by it.

Why there has been a lack of reaction has been answered numerous times before in this thread, but here it goes again:

Microsoft tried to cover the RRoD problem for a very long time before they finally admitted that there actually is a problem. If a 360 RRoDs, there is nothing you can do with it anymore. People had to pay for repairs or buy a new system before MS offered their extended 3 year warranty for RRoD issues. The failure rate is much higher than on any other console released before. These were good enough reasons for people to get angry at Microsoft.

On the other hand, Nintendo admits that there is a problem from day 1, offers free fixing and the number of disc read errors are much lower than RRoD. WPB only leads to the inability to play SSBB, but you can still play all other games on your system. Because Nintendo addressed the issue immediately, people are much more relaxed and forgiving.

I thought we didn't know the number of disc read errors.

Systems owned: Nintendo 64, GameCube, Xbox 360, Atari 7800, Genesis, PlayStation, Dreamcast, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS.

Year-end predictions (April 6, 2008):

  • DS: 94 million (96.0)
  • Wii: 46 million (44.4)
  • PSP: 45 million (43.6)
  • X360: 27 million (27.3)
  • PS3: 24 million (19.4)
  • PS2: 124 million (123.7)

I didn't realize the thread was already three pages long when I did that. >_>

There's never a mention of Nintendo's fault at all.

There is never any mention of it being Nintendo's fault because it seems very unlikely that this even IS Nintendo's fault.
