So if you have not gotten the demo yet you probably won't (unless you can find a day 1 FF T-0 at Walmart or something). I spent about 4 hours on it tonight and would like to share some thoughts.
Let me start with the more negative elements to get them out of the way.
Performance- I thought the graphics were beautiful for an open world game, but the framerate really affected the experiance seeing the combat is pretty fast paced. As much as I love 1080p on my 70 inch TV if I had to choose between that and 60fps for this game I would go with the 60 FPS due to the style of combat. Luckely preformance is one of the areas that tends to be fined tuned later in the development so I am confidence we will get a least a locked 30fps (which would be ok....) but the demo dropped under 30 frequently I felt in one fight against about 12 goblins it was at about 15-20. Again, its a demo so I was not upset but it is something to follow in the games development from here on out.
Graphics- Breath taking. And the final version will only be better. I found myself just scanning the horizon and taking in this beautiful imaginative world and what got me most exited is I doupt Square placed the demo in one of the most exotic locations and I cant wait to see what other regions are in store. Character models are excellant, and at least to my taste likable. From the pictures I thought it looked "douchey" but when you see them in game it just works.
Battle system- Ok. Its fun. Once I figured out how to properly lock on to enemies it really clicked. I do feel the game would benefit if they reduced the global speed of combat by about 25%, at this point new to the system I did not feel like I had time to think through my moves but rather was just reacting because of the pace. Camera needs to be backed up (or give us the option to toggle it out further) it was far to easy to lose those stupid dogs because my field of view was to tight. Like I said I only played about 4 hours so far and I was really getting addicted to the combat, and it was just the vanilla demo set. Once the introduce the techniques you will learn, magic, and other characters (to add variety to the team you bring in) it will be great.
Sound- No need to worry about this. Everything was amazing from the opening menu music to the chocobo farm, the overworld theme and battle tunes. Just great.
General Final Fantasy Stuff- I was worried about the theme, I thought it looked too real. At least in this region it was not an issue. When you see a pic of the gas station by itself it does not feel very FF. When journeying across a open space seeing the vistas they have created and the familiar creatures about, it actually gives the game a unique feel and its wonderful. I have never seen a game merge these elements like this and in the long term I think it will give FF15 an identity (which is exactly what 13 lacked). Best summon ever in any FF game, if this is what they put in the demo I cant image what the Bahumut and Odin will look like...... I cant say exactly why, but I feel like if Final Fantasy 4 came out in 2015 this is what it would look like, I pegged why I feel this way, I just do. I am curious to see how the charater progression looks in the final game, I felt they almost put in a levelling system for the Demo to make it work, every FF has its thing Spheres, Crystarium, Materia, etc I wonder what this games will be.
For a demo I could not be happier. There are a few things I mentioned that could be major issues if not ironed out (Framerate) or minor announces that I would probably get used to over time (the camera and battle speed). But overall the demo increased my anticipation for the final game which means at least in my case square was successful with the demo.
I am not done with it, I think I will have a few more hours with it tomorrow before I get back on T-0 until BB arrives.
psn- tokila
add me, the more the merrier.
