I thought this was pretty funny. Sony used to own a lot of shares in DeNA, but sold their stake in the company about two years ago.

Tell that to King or Rovio.

They need big teams to make those bad games? Boy, they're even more talentless than I thought.

Anyway, I was talking about Nintendo. There's not much talent working at King or Ravio.

I think you're just grossly underestimating the effort required to make a mobile game. How much do you think the budget is on something like the latest Kirby game?

I still cant work out why some Nintendo fans and indeed fans of other platforms think this mobile venture is a bad idea for Nintendo.

Its a great idea.  It will increase revenue and allow nintendo to survive for the evental transition to digital and streaming services that is coming for all of gaming one day.

I see RIP posts here and on GAF (pfft what do those fools know) and I'm perplexed.

Can someone explain to me how this is bad?  I see nothing but positivity here.

This annoncement just added over $3bn to the market cap of Nintendo in less than 1 hour.

The quick answer to your question is that it is because the fans have not studied the details of what was said in the conference, whereas business investors will have.

They have (quite understandably) concerns that Nintendo will be 'selling out' - and it will ruin the value of their ip. There are concerns that Nintendo will be dedicating less resources to console gaming - or maybe quit console gaming entirely. They are concerned that the gain from moving to mobile will only be short term.

If they had studied the details they'd know that Nintendo has no intention of giving up the dedicated console business, and they have no intention of porting existing titles to mobile, because Nintendo, like their fans, do not want to cheapen their ip by delivering a sub-par experience that is limited by the controls of the devices they're porting to. They have not lost their belief that dedicated console gaming has a strong future.

hold hold hold.

It will fall back but in the long run, if they do this right,.... huge!

Do people here realise how big the app market is in Japan?

Japan is the single biggest smart app market in the world, if I remember correctly, which makes this a potentially huge deal.

And lol at that stock going up and up, just goes to show that all they need to do is change strides and break tradition, which is what I've been wanting them to do for ages. I'm really, really happy about this news and I hope they manage to build a venture for the future and stop themselves from lagging several years behind the competition on almost all fronts; it's not doing them any favors and neither are their fans for making a debackle over this, appologists are harmful to any company and people should be cheering them on.

The greatest irony of it all? In the Wii's heyday, gamers were shouting that "this direction in gaming will steal funding and attention away from the games I enjoy!" and now people are going "Nintendo will divert funds and attention to mobile games and take it away from the games I enjoy!" For someone who's been a long time; it is not lost on me.

Bolded: A very interesting point, (as is your final paragraph) especially when Iwata pointed out:

"Last year, an unprecedented thing in the history of the Japanese video game market happened: Five titles for Nintendo 3DS sold more than two million copies each in the latter six-month period of 2014. As this record-breaking incident attests, video game software sales have been progressing smoothly on dedicated video game hardware even after smart devices have become widespread in this country."

No way are they going to ditch handheld for mobile when they've proved that handheld and mobile can co-exist in this way in Japan. Very sensible, then, to get into both.

I don't have any stock on Nintendo, why would this news make me happy?

If I had to express my feelings for this news it would be something like: "Ok, cool"

then ok cool should be your reply for everything. because you have nothing until you buy it. no blood borne, no xenoblade wiiu etc.

and if you already have something there is probably no news at all.

btw rising stocks = money for nintendo

I'm more interested in the next console. If this venture into mobile means revenue, hope much of that dosh goes towards making more great games.

I am reading the games will be co-developed by both so, yeah, Nintendo is now making games for mobile. I'm curious as to which EAD team will move to mobile.

Not a single one. You honestly believe they're going to put teams that are a hundred men big on just mobiles lol?

This! So much this! My god, this is why I usually watch the person posting before reading because I know I'll get angry if I read their post.

Why do people keep changing this thread title?

The thread is about how/why fans are reacting negatively to the news, despite stock jumping significantly. Read the OP. Read the discussion in the thread. Smeags changed the title back to how it was originally planned, so that it fits in line with discussion and the OP.

Leave it as it is. Stop screwing around.

I've been looking at various threads here and on gag but I haven't really seen any upset Nintendo fans, I'm not sure how u came to that conclusion?

I clearly was upset, and now I've moved on from being upset to being very VERY skeptical. Nintendo fans have gone into a wait and see mode, that is all.
