The first game had artificially high sales and broke the million seller mark (not sure how much over, but probably not a lot) due to pre-release hype and the fact that it was practically the only first-year RPG for the PS2. Unfortunately, everything hyped about the game's Georama system turned out to be false, and didn't make an appearance until the sequel.
Dark Chronicle (aka. Dark Cloud 2) sold considerably under the million mark (again, I'm not sure how many exactly; Sony's especially tight-lipped about the sales numbers of games that don't meet expectations), despite being a superior title, due to a total lack of hype. Which is a real pity, as it's one of my favorite PS2 RPGs.

Dark Cloud 2 probably didn't sell as well possibly because if I recall, it was released the same month as Xenosaga(in America) though I am not totally sure if anyone wants to correct me
I'm sure DC2 didn't sell as well because many people were turned off by DC1. Similarly, I'm sure many people skipped out on MGS3 because of the Raiden debacle in MGS2.
I enjoyed DC1, for the most part, but it didn't make me want to rush out and buy DC2. Now that I know how much better DC2 was in comparison, I regret having not made the purchase.
I played the game until I had to buy water, but couldn't afford it and I would die of thrist before I had a chance to earn money. :( EDIT: Sorry, I know that was off topic, but I didn't think I'd ever have a chance to vent that frustration again. The game database would have been a better option. EDIT 2: @Roadkillers: When I wrote in edit 1 that the game database would have been a better option, I meant a better option for me to vent my frustation on. :)
