This will be a SHORTER generation BECAUSE.. 4k.. in two years 4k TVs will be the majority of SETS owned.. People are going to ask why they DONT have 4k gaming.. The PS3/X360 came out at the BEGINNING of 720p/1080p .. so they were able to ride out out.. the PS4/X1 came out at the beginning of 4k,, but WITHOUT support for it.. This will be the reason we will see a 5-6 year generation at BEST..

Current gen consoles are struggling to run last gen games at 1080p/30fps

If you think that next gen will be at 4K you've got to be nuts!

Not sure what the current GENS performance has ANYTHING to do with the next ones.. Do you not understand that in 2 years..  a GPU that can do 4K will cost like $150 bucks..   No reason that it WONT be in the next Gen..   Sony and Microsoft made the choice to use underpowered GPUs in their current consoles..   that doesnt reflect what they will do next time..  in any single way..

Nobody is in a rush to make or produce 4K programming and content its going to take a lot longer then 2 years before the 4K will be the majority of sets owned.

The GPUs might cost $150, but the televisions that actally allow you to notice a difference between 1080 and 4K from 8-10 feet away won't. But aside from that, most console gamers won't have 4K tvs in two years. I'd be shocked if more than 5% of console gamers have 4K TVs now.

Believe it or not, most console owners barely have 1080p televisions now. I'd bet you'd be shocked how many people have their PS4s or X1s hooked up to 720p TVs.

4K blue rays come out this year with over 100 titles ..   Amazon, Netflix, Sony and others are already streaming 4k content..  4k TV programming is coming this year from DirecTV.  so 2016 is the just the beginning of an onslaught of 4k HDR content.....  SO sorry.. in 2 years..  it will be a big deal.. By then 8k TVs will be normalizing in price.. lol

8K, 4K is already overkill.  Anyway I'm guessing 2 years from now the majority of TV sets available in stores will be 4K sets but its going to take a lot longer then that before the majority of households actually own a 4K set.

I don't expect it to sell that much becuase I'm not expect it to last 10 years.
Ps2 had an extended life time due to the slow adoption of the HD format in general and there weren't any avaliable alternatives to release low budget games, now we have smartphones, tablets, Steam, even sub 99$ PCs or Apple TV - like devices will likely be popular in 8 years.

I agree. They should come up with some sort of new way to play games. Maybe they can start working on some sort of VR headset I feel like that technology could be done a lot better now. If only we could get some huge companies like Facebook, Steam, and Sony to invest in these sort of things.

Is this a joke?

Yes read the guy I quoted. He said this gen wont do as good because they aren't releasing anything new as far as ways to play games. He brought up online gaming and Motion control from last gen while ignoring the fact that VR is right around the corner this gen.

I thought so. But this is the internet, you never know when someone is serious or joking.

So what? Just because this technology is hitting the market doesn't mean that consumers as a whole will instantly gravitate to it. How many years did it take for Blu-ray to overtake DVD sales. Ohh right. It still hasn't happened.

Most people don't really care, and now the difference between 1080p and 4K is even harder to distinguish than the difference between 720p and 1080p to the average consumer from 8-10 feet away, and you expect them to eat this all up? Almost instantly? Not happeniing. Big deal or not, it'll be a long long while before Sony or MS can assume their average potential customer will have a 4K tv, and until that time they won't bother. That's something you might be able to say in 2020 or 2021, but certainly not in 2017 or 2018.

So you expect it to sell close to PS2 levels, even though not even the Wii did that?

PS4 is doing amazing. Once pricecuts come, I won't be surprised if it gets sales close to the Wii
