Forums - Nintendo - What if Nintendo were to lower the DS' price to $99?

Let's not go there.....Nintendo could TRIPLE their production and still sell ALL of their DSs

Around the Network

Nintendo will not drop the price of the DS until it falls to PS2 like sales.

The psp needs another price cut, I love it and all but its selling very bad.

PSP's been selling quite good lately, actually!
And yeah, I KNOW Nintendo won't reduce the price for quite a while, but if you take a look at recent PSP sales.. they just might do it if they feel those sales come too close to DS-level sales.. you know, just to stay ahead. In weekly sales, of course, not lifetime. I can imagine Nintendo wanting to lower the DS' price to boost sales even if they continue to sell as they are now, but the PSP was selling equally well.

In Japan I'd argue a price cut is due. The PSP's color releases do boost sales decently there.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

they should lower it to 99 in Japan AFTER DWIX. The have saturated that market pretty well so I think a 99 pricepoint would be great there. We won't see a 99 dollar pricepoint in NA until 2010...

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Its all pretty obvious, no?

Sales would skyrocket. But since its selling out anyway - it would be a terrible move from them.

Its a crazy call, but Nintendo need to start with more "premium" products - at a higher price point - next time around. They would make a heap more money off hardware.

Remember that in Japan, the DS sells for the equivalent of US$163.559. They probably need a price drop there, but not to $99.

Systems owned: Nintendo 64, GameCube, Xbox 360, Atari 7800, Genesis, PlayStation, Dreamcast, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS.

Year-end predictions (April 6, 2008):

  • DS: 94 million (96.0)
  • Wii: 46 million (44.4)
  • PSP: 45 million (43.6)
  • X360: 27 million (27.3)
  • PS3: 24 million (19.4)
  • PS2: 124 million (123.7)

All you people saying the DS is selling out where do you live, i live outside of Toronto and each store has 10-30 DS's each. This is not after a shipment either its like this every day.

The stores don't even carry enough good DS games now, i doubt they could keep enough for a price drop on the DS. Each store i go to has mario, mario cart, pokemon, brain and vision training and 7 different petz games and kids cartoon shows as games. I have never even seen Animal crossing or any of the good games i see people talking about.

I know it's all in jest, but that's going to annoy more people than it humors. I'm going on full out "let's try not to annoy people who don't like Nintendo so that more of them come and make this a more unbiased place" mode.

For the record, a 99 dollar PSP would sell like crazy. It's not going to happen for obvious reasons, but it would stlil sell like crazy.
