I classified Fushigi Yuugi with sailormoon along time ago, Because of all the girls raving about it. >.<
I dont think I can ever get into it.

I have Air on DVD, but I only made it till Ep 4 till it lost my interest, I loved the dog though.
I might get back to it one of these days.

Yep.  It comes in several series:  Slayers, Slayers Next, and Slayers Try.  Sadly the movies aren't as good...

so would you recommend skipping the movies, or are they important to the story?

around. lol.  As far as cartoons go; I mostly stuck with the classics. 

Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, Woody Woodpecker,

Also I watched Saturday Morning T.V. which in my day featured such gems as:

Dungeons and Dragons, Gummi Bears, Smurfs, The Littles, and a lot of others I can't remember now.

More Modern cartoons I watched and enjoyed are:

Spongebob, Animanicas, Pinky and the Brain, Spiderman, X-men, and two for the anime category: Pokemon and Yu gi oh.

Best I've got for you is Romance with a bit of Sci Fi mixed in:

Saikano- bring tissues
Dragonauts- not quite finished but good so far and nearly done
Chobits- extremely good...I suggest the subbed version...but that's just me.

As far as Romance and Fantasy I'm having a tough time coming up with something.....perhaps Scrapped Princess, I know that had Fantasy but I'm not sure there was enough romance to fit your tastes.

The series revolves around Lina and her various companions (Gourry, Amelia...etc).

The movies (most of them) take place long before the series and feature Lina and, her partner of the time, Naga.

Plus, while the series walks the line between silly and serious, the movies are just silly.  I have the feeling you wouldn't appreciate them quite as much as the series.
