The series revolves around Lina and her various companions (Gourry, Amelia...etc).
The movies (most of them) take place long before the series and feature Lina and, her partner of the time, Naga.
Plus, while the series walks the line between silly and serious, the movies are just silly. I have the feeling you wouldn't appreciate them quite as much as the series.
