As Nintendo costumers, we have decided to start this online petition due to the last news about Mario Kart for Wii and its restricted chat. In general, we would like to deal with every subject that is making us think that Nintendo is not listening and doesn't want to improve its services.
- Friend codes:
Since Nintendo’s Online Platform was firstly announced, the so-called Nintendo WiFi Connection (NWC), was, as Nintendo described it, an intuitive, fast and full of possibilities system. Later on, we’ve seen that the users had to manage “friend codes”, consisting on numbers from 12 to 16 digits that became the only way to play with our friends via NWC. If this system, compared with any existing other, seems to be rough, it gets even more complicated when you get to know that each game will have its own independent code. So if you have 10 games for any Nintendo platform, you’ll have to send from 120 to 160 digits to any friend.
And not only that; your friend will never get noticed that you’ve added him, so you’ll have to contact him by any other ways and get his code so you can interact with him. This system is not simple, not easy, neither comfortable. But above all, it’s a giant step backward on the online free services.
- Extension of the platform:
Nintendo promised NWC to be a worldwide online platform since it was announced. This system would allow players to play with any other person around the globe.
Nevertheless, many are the cases when you can only search for opponents inside of your own continent. More intriguing are games like Super Smash Brows Brawl (Wii) or Metroid Prime Hunters (DS) that allow a worldwide gaming; while others like Mario Strikers (Wii) are restricted to one continent. We don’t comprehend such limitations as there were many other games on Nintendo DS with a full worldwide online service. We are speaking of Metroid Prime Hunters, a game without lag problems and including voice chat in hardware like Nintendo DS’.
- Comunication in NWC:
One of the most hard to accept subjects, and the one who has motivated us to develop this petition, it concerns the communication between our opponents in NWC. The last (but not the least) case is Mario Kart (Wii), were apart of having to deal with “Friend Codes” in a game that gets better as more opponents you have, we can’t communicate with anything else than a bunch of pre-determined phrases before or after the match. Not even while racing we will get to communicate with our opponents.
A voice chat improves too much the online experience to let it pass. It doesn’t only confirm that your opponent is not an NPC but it creates an online community where you can exchange ideas, information and opinions about the match. For games like Batallion Wars II (Wii) is simply a must in order to cooperate with your teammate. They are options that have been present for a long time in the online gaming world. Of course we should be allowed to communicate with unknown persons as well.
This could be dangerous for underage players, because they are vulnerable with those systems. But Wii offers a parental protection method that is not being exploited and is one of the best options.
Nevertheless, it’s certainly a contradiction that Pokémon Diamond and Pearl includes a voice chat being a game rated for all publics, including underage players. Because of this, we don’t understand some of the decisions of Nintendo, anyways, we think that it could be solved using the parental protection system.
- Cheaters:
If NWC already offers few possibilities, the straw that broke the camel's back is the attitude of Nintendo against cheaters. NWC is full of persons that modify the values of the game to get an easy victory using forbidden methods (cheaters). Nintendo hasn’t done anything and we are realizing that it’s getting harder and harder to enjoy any match with unknown opponents. We could play with known players that never cheat, but counting with the friend code interchange, plus the non-communication politic, it's more than possible that we finally turn off the console.
Cheats are something that Nintendo should eradicate in order to give a minimal sense to his online platform.
- Wii Channels:
Another subject that takes the most of Wii connection is the Wii Channel. It’s not directly related with NWC, but in our honest opinion, the possibilities of this system of tools and applications are being sadly wasted. This plus the delay of systems like WiiWare, which any other platforms have had from the start: the option of downloading “demos”. Furthermore, the delay of bringing channels like “Nintendo Channel“ makes us think that there is not a real interest on taking advantage of a system with more possibilities.
We think that we have touched all the subjects that worry us, we have given our reasons and explained why we think that Nintendo is not offering anything that could. We are their customers and we think that many things could be improved, because of this, we would sincerely appreciate that all the subjects mentioned above could be considered.
