Forums - Nintendo - Possible effects of Nintendo going mobile. (comparing Captain Toad and Monument Valley)

Should Nintendo go mobile?

Yes! 13 10.08%

No! 103 79.84%

the only advantage of going mobile is being knowed.
new generations do not know what is zelda nor metroid.
nowadays, more people know angry birds than mario.
in few years, the only who will know nintendo franchises will be people with 40 years...

toad is one of the most known nintendo characters, and monument valley was spread to 4 times more people ...

maybe netflix zelda help in this side...

Monument Valley have a neat feature (that definitely should be adopted by Nintendo - for Free Advertising) in how you could go into Photo Mode and make nice pictures, with after-effects, and post them on, for instance, Instagram and Twitter. Not verything has to be kept in miiverse, especially not for a family-friendly game like Captain Toad.

Nintendo would more likely make games for Playstation 4 than make games for mobile.

Making games for iOS/Android would effectively make their handheld line moot, why would people pay $150+ for a seperate device to play portable Nintendo games on at $40 a pop when their phone gives them some Nintendo games for $1-$5 + no additional hardware cost?

Since Nintendo's standing in the console business is pretty much at rock bottom, they'd have more to gain that way.

They could honestly even set up a deal where Sony agrees to support Nintendo's handheld and Nintendo agrees to support PS4/5.

You should also add in that there are MANY more games that sell poorly for every good selling one on mobile whereas Nintendo are pretty much guaranteed at least decent sales with every game they do by staying on consoles.

Oh and where you say 'Let's say Nintendo get to keep half of that' don't forget with digital sales there wouldn't be retailer margins so Nintendo would get to keep 100% for all of those.

This.

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Well, Nintendo could take much higher prices on mobile platforms (even for short games) than an unknown developer like "ustwo" and many gamers would pay the premium price.

Telltale Games does it (the episodes and season passes on iOS and Android aren't cheaper than the same episodes and season passes on all the other platforms), SquareEnix does it (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest,Hitman, Deus Ex, ...), 2K does it (Civilization, Xcom, BioShock...), CAPCOM does it (Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick, Tekken...), EA does it ... and Nintendo definitely could do it too without many complaints about the premium prices.

Capcom doesn't own Tekken......

Interesting post, thanks. Nintendo do have a very good situation going in terms of how well their main IPs sell despite the limited install base. Mario Kart 8 has sold over 4 million. That's really incredible for an install base of 9 million.

Very interesting thread and a very good point!

It can be argued that Nintendo would sell a shit ton on mobile, and while that's true for a few select franchises, the majority of their games would hardly sell anything at all. Only a few games become huge titles, and most of them are free. Angrybirds developer Rovio mostly makes their money on merchandise. They even had to lay off people quite recently. Only goes to show how hard it is to make a profit and why Nintendo just shouldn't go all out on mobile.

Yeah, but Nintendo can also sell a shit tonne on consoles as well.

Absolutely! And like I said, most of their games wouldnt sell all that well on mobile. Better to keep making console games.

I am one of those that voted YES, but let's take that in another thread! (Jag trollade inte!)

Om du inte trollade så betyder det... ;p well, you either make that thread or you answer for your crimes against gaming here and now!
