Names have a hand in spreading word though; like a cool title will capture more attention than a boring one. Insignificant, but it's there.

cosmetics matter.

the CoD audience wouldn't buy the exact same game if it was skinned to have pretty pink ballerinas and you had a gumdrop gun.

there are probably other names than mario that could have still achieved resounding success but there are probably names in which "donald" would have been completely rejected by the market despite being the exact same game. doesn't matter how good a game is if at first sight gamers says "not for me" and doesn't play it.
