I downloaded Sin and Punishment back in November and just a few hours ago finally got around to checking it out. Originally I had only planned to take it for a test run and see how it was, but found it pretty hard to put down.
The controls are a little awkward at first, but it didn't take me long to get the hang of it. I like how you can switch between manual aiming and lock-on as the situation requires. Most of the trouble I had early on had to do with me forgetting about the melee attacks, the dive/roll manuever, and reflecting projectiles. Things started flowing much more smoothly when I got those concepts down to second nature reactions.
The graphics were a nice surprise. Although I realize the look of the game has been spruced up on the VC, Sin and Punishment is one of the better looking N64 games I've played-right up there with Rayman 2 and Majora's Mask. The character designs are pretty stylish, and stand out from those in every other N64 game that I've played. There are actually some scenes in the game that are a bit breath-taking, many of them taking place as you are playing the game. And of course having lasers and such in a game always helps to brighten things up with neon colors.
I also found myself enjoying the music in the game. A lot of it is breezy-sounding electronic tunes that were so prevelant in Japanese games in the 1990's(love it!). I hadn't given much thought to what the music would be like, but I expected an overall darker soundtrack to the game. I'm not complaining about the choice, just found it a bit surprising.
Now about the story...I haven't a frikkin clue. In some spots it was nice and weird, and apparently all hell is breaking loose. That's about all I can say as far as specifics(without going into spoilers). At various parts during the game I kept thinking of how much it reminded me of Akira, which is an awesome movie. Still, I was pretty much lost as far as what the heck was going on, but I have read that more of the plot was explained in the instruction manual. The ending made more sense than the rest of the game, and was pretty cool.
I finished it on the easy setting, but did play a bit on normal afterwards. I used quite a few continues, but still had about 4 left over when I finished it. It was a nice difficulty for the first time through-challenging without being frustrating. I don't think I'll have much of a problem getting to the end on normal difficulty, but I wonder how difficult the final boss battle is on normal? Speaking of which, the final battle was very cool, epic, and unique. The game keeps track of high scores also, and that's always a big bonus in my book.
Who else has played this game around here? I'd like to hear you guys/gals thougths on it if you have.
