Forums - Sony - MTV Ted Price Interview Pt. 2: Killzone vs Resistance...

Multiplayer: A lot of people were thinking “Killzone 2″ was going to be the big Sony FPS for the end of ‘08. This does too. So is this going to be a head-to-head thing? Have you guys gotten any calls from guys in Amsterdam [where the game is being made]?

Price: Actually, we’re close to those guys. Our engine director was just over at Guerilla taking a tour. And we’ve had them in our offices. There’s definitely a friendship between the two studios. And we are both interested in making sure there’s a separation between the games in terms of theme and gameplay. Where they’re both released in relation to each other, I don’t know. That’s up to Sony marketing. What’s cool is that we both feel that same competitive spirit. We’re pushing each other, and that’s fine. It’s a good-natured competitiveness.

Multiplayer: Did that “Killzone 2″ trailer a couple of years ago fire you up back then?

Price: Yeah, and it was awesome. It was last E3, and when our guys saw it running for real, they thought, “Wow they just raised the bar and we all gotta make sure we can do the same.”

Multiplayer: Are you determined to have the better-looking game?

Price: Not in those words. I think it’s understandable that we’re both going for the best-looking game possible. The games are a lot of different. Yes, they’re both first-person shooters. And they both involve military aspects. But they’re on a different planet. We’re on our world with an alternate history. They’ve got a completely different gameplay style than we do. We’ve got Chimera. They’ve got Helghast.

Multiplayer: You’ve got the church.

Price: I don’t think it worries either of us.

Whoops, that was part 3.

Part 2 can be found here.  It talks about SurferGirl, among other things.

Off topic, but given that GG is now owned by Sony, I just can't see KZ2 being merely an average game like the first. GG now has an insanely large budget and a much larger dev team. That combined with competition and support from Sony's other 1st and 2nd party dev studios like Insomniac and Naughty Dog should help the game be great.

The interview was pretty good, some nice questions and some great answers.

The larger a dev team gets the harder it is too control.  With budget estimates as large as $60 million, don't you think it's possible this title went completely off course and Sony sent good money after bad trying to fix it?

The devs themselves have said just recently that they had set a release a good while back, and are still on track to meet it.

The original killzone didn't have any problems with delays, or anything of the sort.  It's only problems were glitchy graphics, spotty AI, and linear level design.  And the multiplayer kicked ass for a ps2 game.

Anywho, the dev team is now over 160 people large (compared to 40 originally), and only 25 of those are programmers.  The rest are level designers and artists, which should improve the linear level design.  AI was already fixed as of KZ:L, and GG has said that they are working vigorously to improve the AI even further, due to the  complaints from the original. The only problem left was the glitchy graphics, which a good amount of polish should fix.  Hell, it already looked damn good back at E3 '07, in playable form.

I don't think the budget is so high because the game is crap.  Sony wouldn't waste that amount of money on a doomed project.  I think the budget is that large because Sony is putting everything they have into this game.  Why hold an E3 press event dedicated SOLELY to Killzone 2?  Why send out flashy invitations, and invite big name developers like Hideo Kojima to see a game that is a piece of crap money drain?

Im gonna go agianst the grain here and say killzone 2 is going to be really good.

Edit: So much for that rumor that was floating arund about how "insomniac is pissed GG for taking all the money.

That was good, thanks for posting.

Interesting interview...
