Call of Duty 4 sales have been absolutely astounding. As you may or may not have noticed, Call of Duty 4 recently passed Halo 3 as the best selling shooter this generation. Total sales so far:

 
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (delete)   5.03m
 
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (delete)   2.52m

 
Halo 3 (delete)   7.37m


And of course the best selling FPS game ever is still

Halo 2 (delete)   8.45m


Call of Duty 4 is at 7.58 million after only 4 months on the market. It's also been in the top 10 best selling games on Steam consistently since its launch (it's at #3 right now), and is still selling nearly 100K a week on consoles. Halo 3 will probably pass Halo 2 as well, but Call of Duty 4 increases its lead over Halo 3 every week. It's the fastest selling FPS game ever, and should pass Halo 2 within 4-6 months.

Technically it could already be the best selling shooter ever, since it had sold 400K in retail in North America in 2007 alone on PC.  Add to that the untracked Steam sales (where it's been in the top 10 since launch, sometimes over The Orange Box), and the strong European PC market and Call of Duty 4 could have another 1.5-2 million sales on the PC version. 

What do you guys think of this? Well-deserved? Overrated?

Personally I think it's an excellent game. Feels like the next counter-strike to me, and I'm quite addicted to it on PC. Either way, it's proved its selling power. Hopefully this will make Activision think twice about going back to World War 2.

thats true but halo 2 only came out forr 1 console. if it also came out for the ps2 then it would have sold probably twice as much.



the nintendo wii will outsell the ps3 and the 360 combined by the end of 2008.                           

        PS3 will out sell the 360 june 2010.                                                                      

  GOTY of 2008 is super smash brothers brawl.... hopefully.

I actually liked the CoD4 multiplayer for the few hours I tried it, which is a rarity for me, so good show.

Any stats exist for Half Life 2, Orange Box, etc? I doubt they're near COD4, but they have sold a lot as well I think.

edit:  And yes, if you count PC sales, then I'm pretty sure COD4 has sold more than Halo 3 and Halo 2 as well, making it the best selling FPS.  Still want to know about HL2 though.

Good. It's a great game. My favorite of the genration so far... probably. Smash Brothers may change that if the create a stage mode delivers enough... So might Battleifled of the Valkrie, or whatever the heck they're naming it over in the US.
