the Wii will always have the cost advantage. Nintendo could drop the Wii to 179.99 today and still break even. Nintendo will always keep the Wii at a lower price than the cheapest HD SKU.
End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)
Wii- 72 million 3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases
360- 37 million Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak
PS3- 29 million Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut
| Plaupius said: I think it is safe to say that they can not compete with Nintendo on price, Wii will always be cheaper to produce than X360 or PS3, so what can they do that would improve their chances? Pretty much the only options they have are to try to lower the perceived value of Wii through marketing / capturing 3rd party developers from Nintendo, and trying to increase the perceived value of their own console. Is it possible? Yes. Is it realistic? Probably not. |
I think it's safe to say that the perceived value of the Wii was bigger than the 2 others from day one.
And that the other two tried to decrease the perceived value of the Wii before it even launched. They were small attacks before the Wii launch, because they thought it was dead on arrival, and this was just the nail in the coffin. But as soon as the Wii started to win, they attacked full force.
MS especially is well known for its viral marketing, heavy astroturfing and army of shills. They started to appear everywhere on the Web less than 3 months after Wii launch. But the Wii is so amazing, the Nintendo marketing was so good, that even without defending themselves, the MS shills never succeeded in lowering its value.
And if you have good memory, you can remember lots of attacks against the Wii, like the "it breaks your expensive HDTV" campaign, which was one of the more efficient ones, or the "Nintendo had to recall all the wiimotes because they are defective". All of these attacks appear like nonsense when you've played the system.
So the question is: did all these attacks work? The answer is NO! Thank god!
And Nintendo did that with their 1st party games alone. Which is obvious when you read all the comments about 3rd party games. But I've no doubt that when hopefully decent 3rd party support all around takes off, you will have people saying that the success of the Wii was thanks to 3rd party support, like some say now about the DS. Consequency mistaken for causality.
As for price, I'm still pretty convinced that even if the other two went below the Wii price, the Wii would still sell better. The other two will avoid at all costs going below the Wii price: that would be a sign of failure, and would send this very message to consumers. How can you say the Wii is low power, base your marketing on power, and yet sell your console cheaper than the one everyone want so much so that there are constant shortages? To
the consumer, that means it's the inferior product in this case.
Perceived value is all that counts: if you're more expensive, it's too expensive! If you're cheaper, you are a cheap product! For the uneducated mass market that is.
I don't really disagree with him much, but that doesn't take anything away from the Wii.
The Wii has been tremendously successful and nothing can "damper" that fact.
But the ps3 and 360 will narrow the gap in sales as their prices drop. There is undeniably a huge difference in price between $250 & $500. A $300 BC (backwards compatiable) PS3 will definitely compete BETTER (didn't say it would pass) with the Wii--commonsense. You can say that the Wii can lower its price too...which is true, but will they when they can't even reach current demand? No...not for a long time. Demand needs to drop and supply needs to increase big time for Nintendo to even THINK about lowering the Wii price.
Point is:
Duh, of course a $250 ps3 will compete with a $250 wii better than a $500 ps3 will compete with a $250 wii. And I think we all agree the ps3 & 360 will lower their prices sooner than the wii because of supply/demand factors.

the problem is that a lot of dev's feel that way not only THQ
::shrug:: I doubt THQ's ability to release a good game. I haven't been interested in a game from THQ in a long time. I wouldn't miss anything if they didn't release their games on Wii

On another note, most 3rd parties are pretty dumb and have a severe lack of longterm plan. To me, Capcom and Square Enix are the only one with a long term plan, but even them pulled back last gen, because they couldn't believe that Nintendo would come back so fast.
I mean, if you launch a successful franchise, you hope to milk it for at least two gen. The 3rd parties were all so sure the Playstation would be the standard from now on, that they all put their eggs in the same basket before this gen even started.
Which is a TERRIBLE mistake, because if you do that, all of your famous franchises are tied to one console, which make it harder to develop and sell on another, if another console becomes dominant. Besides, you have no installed base that can drive sales on the new dominant console. Thus why Capcom was the first one able to put "high" level of technical games on the Wii (compared to last gen), besides Nintendo of course.
Most 3rd parties still haven't realized that, and go on putting their best games team on other consoles than the Wii, like THQ, because they're just not ready to even tackle Gamecube level games. In the process, they're losing lots of money and are now in trouble.
It's obvious developers have no talent, and are no good, which supposedly they are, when they're unable to put better than last gen techno on a better than last gen console. And they say the Wii is underpowered. Thank god! They can't even master it. Think of if it was more powerful, the games would appear to be far worse.
Several 3rd parties just lowered their games' marketshare this gen, but the worst danger is that if the Wii wins this gen, and the next Nintendo console starts dominating too, that will completely destroy the 3rd party franchises.
Keeping this strategy of theirs, I see most 3rd parties shunning the Wii, dieing a hard death this gen.

They're also making De Blob and Deadly Creatures, which are far more interesting projects to people who frequent this site. They also just published a new Kill All Humans title for Wii. It's hard to criticize THQ for not bringing big, AAA-quality IPs to the Wii, because they don't really deal in that kind of game. They're a mid-tier developer, and their support for Wii has been modest, but I think they're ahead of the curve compared to a lot of other 3rd-party publishers. Edit: A quick scan of the games database shows 17 Wii titles published or in development, compared with 9 for PS3 and 19 for X360. Plenty of dubious shovelware on all platforms. Besides Smackdown vs. Raw, which sold well on all platforms, their only solid success of the generation has been Saints Row on X360. I think they're wisely trying to cover all the bases and I don't think they're really shorting the Wii that much at all. |
So why didn't this post end this thread?
The guy's comments really don't sound like a big deal. He noticed that the other consoles are selling too and will continue to sell... I really don't see the problem here.
I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.
Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.
Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!
Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

That's your interpretation of what the guy said. Other people interpreted his comments differently.

No DragaonLord, You sir are incorrect. Sony and Microsoft are not going to lower the cost of their consoles if it means losing money. Demand would have to significantly dry up before either of those companies would go that route your talking about. Even if Nintendo still could not catch up to the demand for the Wii, If the competition between Xbox 360, PS3, and the Wii pick up significantly then they would drop the price. They did this with the DS even though the supply was not reaching the level of the demand but the competition from the PSP in North America and Europe was fierce. This was during the first full year of the PSP's lifetime or the second, Not really sure but it happened.
By the way, the Xbox 360 Arcade is $279.99 but the Wii is still out selling the Xbox 360 not only in North America but World wide.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba
