Forums - Sony - Sony Making Over $50 Million a Month from PlayStation Plus?

Sony has been doing very well in the console space since the launch of it’s extremely popular PlayStation 4, but with the launch of that hardware came the stark realisation that a PlayStation Plus subscription on the PS4 would be required in order to play your multiplayer games online (although there are some free-to-play games that are exceptions). With the holiday season over, Sony announced that they had sold 18.5 million units of the PS4 to customers, but also also that they now have 10.9 million PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Using simple maths, and a base figure of around $5 a month for PlayStation Plus (consider it is more expensive in some regions than others), that roughly equates to $54.5 million a month. Or more than half a billion dollars a year from the subscription service, which offers the best value from all the competitive services.

We can only see this service growing more and more as this console cycle continues, especially when you consider the fact that you tend to get the best games 2 or 3 years after the consoles have launched. Now with the Xbox One and PS4 going into their second years, things are about to get very interesting.

I paid 66€ for 2 years thanks to amazon. I wonder when I will start to actually use the online multiplayer feature.

in revenue....

Publishers and devs don't put their games on ps+ for free.

Theh make it sound like the service costs nothing to have... Do they think that all those games you get with IGC cost nothing for Sony?

Gross Revenue could be around $50 Million a month (some people only buy monthly/ quarterly... but some people also buy annual subscriptions on sale); but they certainly are not pocketing all that.

You need to realize that every game they offer, and they offer 6 per month -- costs the company money. I have NO IDEA what kind of contracts Sony makes for PS+, but my assumption is that they outright cut them a check. Pulling numbers, from my rear -- I would guess that each indie costs sony at least $200K, and a AAA title is at least $2-5M.

Many of the AAA games offered are probably willing to sell for a few dollars per copy downloaded due to the expectation of DLC purchases (i'm looking at you Borderlands 2... I got you free but payed $30 for the season pass).

You gotta factor in costs of having and maintaining the service as well as all the free games they give away. I'm sure their making quite a bit but I'd say they putting at least 30% to 50% of it back into the service.

netflix has about 30 or 40 million users, costs more, but they also have more expenses i guess because of movie rights and so. and look at how valuable and big their market is. subscriptions really are a good business model.

sony should make a good profit of that. now it only has to continue to grow and deliver value besides the free games, like a stable network - and sony has a constant cashflow they can count on, that's enormous important.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:

WiiU: Donkey Kong

XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse

Even if they only pocket half of that (due to costs and other things), it's theoretically enough to fund an Uncharted game per month.

Don't forget Uncle Sam *cough* Obama *cough* wanting his share...

All sorts of tax laws on this as income... all sorts of nations want their cut.

I guess developers are getting 30%
