Forums - Nintendo - Would it be possible for the Wii U to run Zelda U at 60fps?

But when I compare Skyrim on last gen to Zelda U on this gen, there's clearly different factors. Skyrim was clearly poorly optomized while Zelda U will almost definitely be very well optimised. Skyrim has far more going on when it comes to textures and is definitely working with much more texture as it's a more realisic game. I don't know the difference in map size, but I'm sure they're comparable. And then there's the fact that the Wii U hardware is more powerful. Is it possible then that all that could add up to a 60fps open world game?

Although Skyrim is a busier game, Zelda will likely have more advanced effects. Also CPU wise isn't the Wii U  weaker then the 360?

Honestly though, I wouldn't compare it to Skyrim simply because Nintendo are not Bethesda. This generation they've made it very clear they've struggled to get to grips with HD development, whereas teams like Bethesda make it their gaol to be at the bleeding edge of tech. Zelda U will be highly optimised to to run at its desired settings, but I don't think it will be highly optimised to squeeze every ounce of power from the hardware- something Skyrim looks to do on the 360. To be honest we haven't seen this from Nintendo since, twilight princess on gamecube.  Typically its been 3rd parties who push Nintendo hardware(Retro, Rare, Capcom, Factor 5) nintendo merely work within hardware limitations with brilliant attention to detail and art design (Mario Galaxy, Windwaker, Mario Kart 8).

Weaker CPU, but better GPU and twice as much RAM.

And yeah, Nintendo stopped caring about pushing the limits of their own hardware some time ago.

Yeah, I'm not an expert but I would think the frame rate is more dependent on the CPU and it will be pretty taxed with an open world game meant to mirror the real world?

First of all, the polygon count and texture res of zelda U IS really high.

For your question: of course it can. 720p 60fps is a possibility, but I'm more inclined to think 1080p 30fps because past zeldas were 30fps.

If there is something Nintendo's developers excell at, it's optimization. I say that it really depends on what they determine more important, 1080p resolution or 60fps, I don't think you can have both. I think it's safe to say that Ninty would choose 60fps since they don't have the dumb audience that would prefer pretty-ness over responsive-ness that Sony and Microsoft have.

Pretty much my thoughts, too. Nintendo seem to favour responsiveness over anything else, and they're good at achieving it. I doubt Zelda will be 1080p60 (this is a lot harder to achieve with these kind of open games), but I could see Nintendo taking the necessary measures to get the 60fps down.

Impossible. It will probably be 720p/30fps.

I have evidence that the game will be 1080p: http://press.nintendo.com/E32014/

Scroll down the page and click on The Legend Of Zelda, you will download 4 screenshots in 1080p, and they don't seen upscaled.

Oh you already played new Zelda? lol

Yes I already played Zelda. Many Zeldas actually. And I even watched all of the footage for Zelda U. Zelda was never known for (geometrical) world complexity. Always simple shapes, flat surfaces, very few 3D objects apart from the grass. The footage we've seen so far supports that.

WHAT? there are tons of objects everywhere. have you missed the mountains/trees/smaller rock formations/animals...?

Except HW never lets you see huge expansive areas at once, blocking the way with walls and other obstructions, while we've already seen Zelda U stretch for vast distances. ZU is also lightyears ahead of HW in graphical fidelity.

If they can competently scale down the complexity in distances(LOD) this shouldn't be a huge hit to performance. I still believe Wii U is stronger than the PS3 and that one could run AC games which feature huge draw distances with lots of geometry. And as far as world complexity goes AC is miles ahead of Zelda.

So again, if they don't manage to make Zelda 720p60 I will have a good old laugh. Which will then quickly turn into disgust when I have to play it.

wii u is way stronger than ps3. and AC general draw distance, graphical fidelity and performance can't be compared to zelda U. Zelda is way higher.

Not likely. The Wii U just isn't capable enough to run an open-world game at either 1080p or 60fps. Expect nothing more than 720p30.

Hardware owned:

PC, PS4, 3DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3

Most anticipated games (near to mid future):

Zelda U/NX
The Last Guardian

I dont see why not, Nintendo knows how to develop on their console. i am sure it will

PSN & XBOX GT : cutzman25

Nintendo always looks for 60 so it will run at 720/60 and is not as incredible as it may seem because of cell-shading graphics style wich looks good without needing much power.

Just look at borderlands and its cell-shading graphic style, it runs 720p 30fps without problem on ps3 so Wii U with more power won't have problem to run zelda at 720/60.
