Most people who say they use common sense, don't actually. There are studies on this. Same thing with people refering to themselves as not racist for example. So no it doesn't work that way.

I'm not sure the main charecter of a series that's sold 20 - 30 million units could be considered "unknown at best" :p Even amoung non-gamers.
