I'm starting to think Bungie. Also, if their next project fails to be something epic, Retro Studios.

I don't think some people in this thread understand that one can be great while still being overrated.

Anyway, I have to say Nintendo. Love them but there is a certain crowd, especially critics who simply have a hard on for anything Nintendo produces. While I agree the quality is there most of the time, I simply wouldn't call every game a master piece.

As for Naughty Dog, I can see why some people would call them overrated. Believe it or not, some people care very little for story telling in video games and look more for unique gameplay which something like Uncharted lacks imho.

Come on guys allow for some criticism, I'm not saying they are bad, just not quite as amazing as some people think.

There's a difference between offering constructive criticism (which I'd even throw their way sometimes) and calling them "overrated". The latter suggests their games don't meet a certain quality. 

they don't meet a certain standard that's the point, they make good games not masterpieces, they are praised for fantastic storytelling when it is at best decent for a video game

Rockstar. They are truly great at creating gameworlds but other than that I feel they are mediocre.

Current Naughty Dog. To me Uncharted and The Last of Us are massively overrated, but I do absolutely love their work on Crash and Jak during the PS1/PS2 era.

Mario 64 comes out welp guess we have to make one too. = Crash Bandicoot

Mario Kart 64/Diddy Kong Racing damn those are good games guess we have copy = Crash Team Racing

Last Of Us is a clone of their own games = Uncharted and thats a clone of Tomb Raider

both are barely games at all.

Rachet and Clank is the only series they made that I truly enjoyed.

I might have agreed that they lack originality. But then TLOU happened. It basically reinvented the survival horror genre. Truly an astounding achievement.

I'll have to say Naughty Dog, if only for the way that studio's followers defend it so jealously. I'm of the opinion that Naughty Dog is one of the best developers of the last 15 years, yet the hyperbole and adulation that so often accompanies the mention of the studio turns even me off.

Just look at this thread. Critics of Naughty Dog have already been branded as "xbox fans," haters, and "envious" fans. 

Why, when someone picks Bethesda or Rockstar or BioWare, it's fair game, but when someone picks Naughty Dog, it's the result of envy or ignorance?

I know the word overrated is overrated but whatever. It's a short way to ask "what developer most people seem to like don't you like?"


Just going to leave this here from the OP. This isn't a "right or wrong" thread. No developer is immune. Everyone has their own opinions... Learn to respect them and move on.

 

With that out of the way... I'll go with Bungie.

You don't have to add unique gameplay to your games for them to be great. Furthermore, that's hardly a reason a company should considered "overrated", especially when their specialties are character, storytelling, and technical achivements - things they generally excel at. 

I never said they weren't great, I'm a huge fan of the Uncharted series myself. I was simply trying to give some insight on why some people might not like it and therefore calling it overrated.

TLOU is nothing like Uncharted and R&C was Insomniac.
