2004 was a big year for gaming imo, Halo 2, Fable, Star Wars Battlefront. KOTOR 2. GTA: San Andreas, Half Life 2. I personally played 4 of those that year, and all 4 are among my top 20 favorite games of all time.

2015 is looking really good though, assuming no games that are currently announced for 2015 are delayed it could be the best year yet. And the best part is that more games could still be announced for release next year!

Like you I found 2004 to be a great year and besides enjoying the games you mentioned  , I had a great time playing Rome:total war.

Metalgear solid 3. Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne. Vampire the Masquerade:Bloodlines. Warhammer 40,000:Dawn of War. Burnout 3. Doom 3 . and Katamari Damacy.

1998 forever, all platforms were great that year. So many new and exciting things to play in one year.

Toss up between 1998 or 2001.

i liked end 04 through 05 gtaSA, mgs3 re4 and nfsmw

imo these are the best games in there genre no gta after SA has come close sure the graphics are better but none had the amount of content same with mgs3 i liked the story and open world jungle environment it went hand in hand with one of my favs shows Lost at the time, i thought 4 was sub par and 5 doesnt look like were getting the classic snake that we know from the first mgs

re4 was also pretty revolutionary when it released and like mgs3 had a lengthy campaign none of the RE after where as good and the only thing that competes with it imo is tlou which released 8 yrs later. 2005 nfsmw is also my fav racer ever with its speed breaker and pursuit breaker features as well as keeping the customizations from the underground games and having a day to night cycle free roam world that you can have great cop chases in

after that time period i would say late 09-10 b/c of uncharted 2, COD mw2 and BO

1998 was great. 2004 very good too. But I Really enjoyed 2007. New engines and more realistic graphics with games like the orange box collection. All the HLs And Portal, Crysis, Cod MW, and Bioshock. Was the best modern year. 2013 was very good too.

People say 98 for a reason. To my it's a tossup between 97, 98 and 00. I purchased my N64 with Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye 007, WCW/nWo World Tour, and Star Fox 64,while I was playing FFVII, Mega Man 8, and Resident Evil: Director's Cut on my bros PSX.

98 Brought Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time AND Link's Awakening DX, Pokémon, Mario Party, MGS, Resident Evil 2, Baldur's Gate, Starcraft and the Game Boy Color.

00 Brought me my Dreamcast with Street Fighter Alpha 3, SF3: Third Strike, Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Pokémon Silver on the GBA, Baldur's Gate 2 on the PC, and rounding it off were Classics on the N64 with Perfect Dark and Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

It's like picking a favorite child!

Most likely 2010

Fallout New Vegas and Mass Effect 2 both came out that year and blew me away.

1998 had everything

2018 - Release of the Atari 6900 which revives the gaming industry after the crash of 2016 with games like GTA VI,Pokemon +/-, Zelda: Wand of Link's Future, Super Mario 69,Uncharted 6, Mario Kart 9, Final Fantasy XVII, Meme Run 3, Call of Duty: Medieval Cockfights, ET3 and many, many more.

But if we are talking pre-crash, then 1998 takes the spot.

Can't decide: from 1998 to 2001 each year had great games for my tastes.
