Actually all those games you listed have more GotY awards than Destiny

I'm speaking for me, but :

Shadow of the mordor is a rip off. Sure the game is good, but it would have been a phenomenon if it was released before ACreed and Batman Arkham. Fact is, it wasn't.

Bayonetta 2, is Bayonetta. Classic beat em all have aged horribly, and except for Wish time, bayonetta haven't really changed the core formula. It's a good game without a doubt but nothing ground breaking.

Smash bros u, same game since melee. Same goes for Mario Kart U.

Again I'm speaking for me. I'm not a fan of Destiny at all, but we can't argue that except for the shitty execution, the idea and formula is great and we all know activision is gonna make something about it and correct the wasting opportunity of the first ones. Even if Destiny isn't a great game at all, I would have vote for it too. Really nice tentative, really good setup and concept, all wasted because of bad execution. BUT, that is what sequel are made for.

It actually got GOTY from some sites?

Wow.

The fact that Destiny won any GOTY awards makes me sad, but 5? *shakes head*

Not even the sites' loyal visitors agree with the choice. Sad to see Activision shelling out money just so they can put "GOTY edition" on a box next year.

Personally, I feel that Destiny has a lot of the same concepts in place as Borderlands, but just with a shittier execution. I really wanted to like the game, and I was certainly excited about it, but there are just so many flaws with it that I can't really continue to play the game; especially with so many much better games out there either in my backlog or available to purchase. Yes, the game will continue to get more content (and, hopefully better content), but that doesn't help with the fact that the game was quite mediocre, aside from presentation and control, at launch, and continues to still be mediocre. The amount of actual single player content is pretty laughable compared to a number of other games out there for full retail, and the multiplayer is also lacking in that sense. I enjoyed the game for about a month, maybe, but the story and content is just too shallow to care to play more...the multiplayer would highly benefit from a more in depth ranking/reward system and also a multitude of game types added(at least capture the flag?). Hell, I think they could add some more types of vehicle combat into the game considering this is a sci-fi game. It's a lot to ask, but really the picture Bungie/Activision painted up to release with this game was a truly epic universe with mmo proportions.

In reality we have gotten a handful of planets(of which you can only explore one damned area...it's a planet, come on), a fairly middling experience for a multiplayer shooter(let's say, compared to Halo, since this is Bungie we are talking about), two raids that are okay I guess because at least they change things up a slight bit, the Strike missions which are decent fun for the first 4-5 times you play them, and an insanely shallow story that does little to explain things to you(you have to read some damn grimoire cards to get any semblance of a story and those aren't even available to read on the game itself).

Really, I have a hard time understanding the lack of creativity and just pure laziness that went into the main story. You follow around your ghost who repeatedly unlocks things for you and you have to fight waves of enemies until he finishes. You don't even have to protect him, so there's not even a sense of danger to heighten the adrenaline. That's almost the entirety of every mission...how could they not think of any other game mechanic to throw in to change things up? Simply amazing. I've developed a theory that the really bad guy is your own Ghost. He just keeps taking time while he signals in enemies to kill you. He has to give in after you down a certain amount of waves so you don't catch on to his plans...and you know what, that would probably be a better story, lol.

All ranting aside, I do hope they add some worthwhile content to this game, or at the very least that a second game more fully realizes the grandiose ideas that the developers had in mind for the series. Even so, I'll be very skeptical and wait and see if the second game is worth a purchase. I would not recommend the first. It doesn't deserve to be on any game of the year awards lists, and no I don't think the game is groundbreaking in any real sense. In fact it is rightfully on some sites/reviewers worst games of the year.
