Basically it was stripped. No story, no characters other than Toad clones, combat system oversimplified and battling in general pointless without a leveling system.

Well i enjoyed those aspects, and correct me if im wrong, but i remember a dedicated portion of E3 dedicated to show how the game was not a traditional Paper Mario. They even explained the stickers mechanics.

I don't remember exactly what they said, but it doesn't matter as it's bad game with or without the Paper Mario name.

I heard that Miyamoto did a poll or something asking fans what kind of direction they wanted them to take the series and apparently they voted for it to be more like Super Paper Mario rather than the original or Thousand Year Door. I'm not sure if that's true, I think I read it on here somewhere.

It's alright to enjoy playing bad games mate! Afterall I liked FFXIII despite similar issues!

3- TTYD
4- Super Paper Mario 

Okay I can understand why some would put the original over the better in literally ever way TTYD cause nostalgia n what not, but to put Sticker Star above it is crazy! How can you like a massively stripped down version of TTYD over the real deal?
