I considered it at one point, here is the bad news:

Once you graduate, to be successful, you pretty much need to move to California to get a foot in the door of the business, then ship out where-ever they send you.

Game design or PR involves a lot of moving and shaking, and its just not a stable enough career choice for my liking.

Not true. California does have the most places to go but there are studios all over the place. I managed to stay in Dallas area and Texas is actually the second biggest game state. Austin is quickly becoming a very large gaming city.

Yeah, Texas is great. Isn't Retro studios outta Texas?

Not to fanboy out here, but I bet Texas is Miyamoto's most visited American state.

Yup, Retro is in Austin and even know a few people there.

If they would have been hiring while I was looking I probably could have gotten a job there but probably wouldn't have taken it just because I didn't want to leave the Dallas area.

And hooray for bear cookies. Bears beat Battlestar Galactica.

I already AM in school for game design XD. Actually in class right now...

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

Yeah, I didn't post all the above stuff to offend anyone already in one of those game design degrees, just giving out info I've learned.

Far too often I see people who graduated with one of those various game design degrees who have no clue what they're doing and running around places like GDC doing more bad than good.

I forsee no sense of humor. Really though, If you want to make games for a living you better prepare for 100 of hours of work a week. I think a great alternative is Computer Science. It will be a hell of a lot cheaper.

I should also note for you people already in a game design school it isn't impossible to get a job even if you go to one of the bad ones, you just have to make sure to work stupid hard and not just assume you'll find a job.

Never. Game development is where every developer wants to be. So, the money sucks.

I make a very good living working for a midsize company developing in-house applications.
