2016 will be the 20th anniversary of the series, if anything we'll get a crapton of games that year.

They were already all the same with a 2 year gap. I still haven't felt the need to play any other than firered. Not that I haven't played the others too (except the 3ds ones). But never finished any apart from firered.
It's pretty much an annual franchise already. There's been 18 games over the past 18 years (3 per generation). That's not counting any remakes or spinoffs, either. Just the main games.

-Samuel Clemens
To me it's not yearly. It's 3 years per new story. I don't count remakes. Because those are rehashes and are not needed. YOu don't lose out on much if you don't buy everything. All the new features added to he remakes gets moved into the future game. Unless it's something time consuming. Like the pokemon following feature in HG/SS.

You count both versions as two sperate games I take it. I don't do that. It's really one. The 3rd game is just a modification, same story. The only time I would count them as new games is B/W 2. Since they continue the story. The 3rd game doens't do that. It tells the same story with some difference and aditions.

Except it is yearly.

You can call Yellow or Platinum "the same game" all you want. They're not. And that's not counting spin-offs mind you.
Anyway, I've grown extremely indifferent to Pokemon. I still replay FR/LG somewhat regularly, and had fun with HG/SS, Emerald and Platinum. But... meh. It kinda gets old, I'd appreciate even small changes to the formula, like stop making gyms just one type (meaning you can DESTROY the whole gym with just one pokemon).
And I understand that the handheld games sell A LOT, so there's no reason to change them. But do SOMETHING, for god's sake. Like put it on the Wii U, or make actual interesting storylines, change up the gameplay a little bit, I don't know.

I already said here that Pokémon is Nintendo's CoD and Assasins Creed. And I don't like it...
This is the franchise I loved the most as a kid, that love is practically gone. Probably never to return if Gamefreak keeps rehashing their games. Because all Pokémon games are just simple rehashes.
I see plenty of Nintendo fans taking shots at EA and Ubisoft for their yearly releases... Why not Nintendo with Pokémon? Even if the gap between games was 5 years, it still doesn't change the fact that nothing changes. What did the new Pokémon type (fairy) change for me when I played X/Y? Absolutely nothing.

This. It's an improvement over X / Y and I'm quite enjoying it, but it's just becoming too repetitive and I don't like the style of the modern games. I'll just keep replaying Heart Gold every few years for the nostalgia.

We really ought to see a new Pokemon Stadium for the WiiU sometime
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Oooooh I forgot. Well then maybe 2017 will be skipped... or maybe there will be no more skipped years and GameFreak is going full annualized. In which case, ew.

When i was younger i loved it when a new game came out pretty much every year but now i wish they would do a 2 to 3 year+ cycle on the main games to give each generation a longer time to shine as well as having the current game stay in the competitive scene longer.
So maybe something like this
Main Game
Spinoff handheld game
Console Game
Third Game in the same gen or Remake of an older gen.
Rinse and repeat.
