It does look amazing, but despite sharing that sentiment and owning a Master Sword replica even it is somewhat forced to find a place in line on the hype train for me. I can't wait for Captain Toad's EU release, and Mario Maker will be a fantastic tool for me to study level design through! And then there are Splatoon and Xenoblade...

 

Not to mention Star Fox 64 just falls shy of the greatness that fills my my two favourite games of all time, but is a strong contender for third. Kirby's Canvas Curse is probably top ten too.

I was never particularly fond of Microsoft or their place in the gaming industry anyways (though I will say that they have some amazing exclusives now and one day I might pick one up, as I will the PS4). So there was only one option left: The Wii U.

I used to be in the same position as many. I laughed at Nintendo. I thought their consoles and games were kiddy and they didn't have much to offer gamers anymore. But I kid you not, when I actually took the time to research the Wii U, I felt that urge to own it. It's exactly what I wanted to feel from the PS4. This is for a few reasons.

One: The gamepad. Yes, many people mock it. But I saw the novelty in it. I appreciated that Nintendo was stepping outside of the box, something that I wanted the competition to do. I felt as though the PS4 and XBO weren't so different from their predecessors to justify their existence. But the Wii U and its quirky, controversial tablet controller made me excited to be a gamer. Two: The games. I have been playing PS games my whole life. I grew up with the Crash Bandicoots and the Ratchet & Clanks, games like Killzone, Bloody Roar and The Last of Us that same year, but Nintendo offered something different. I had only ever owned a Wii, and I didn't play that much outside of Mario Kart and Smash Bros. When I saw games like Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World and Bayonetta 2, I knew this was a change for the better. Three: No charge for online play. This speaks for itself.

So, I made the plunge and got a Wii U. And I consider it my favorite console of all time. This is just my little experience (sorry if it was a bit long, this is my first thread after all!) but I want to know: Have you ever bought a console for a reason that seems a little unorthodox to everyone else? I'm curious. :)

I have a similar reason for getting my wii u, plus the facts of 1 can play dual screen multi player sniping, which I always wanted 2. Off screen play in an instant when someone walks in and wants the tv and 3 all the best kids games are on the U as well as adult games and family games that I can play with my wife. I was set on a ps4 and bought a Wii U on a whim Black Friday 2013. 320 with 3 games and an extra wii mote. Now I have 11 games and have played this console more in the last year than I have played video games (excluding pc) since the ps1 or sea mega drive.

I was a sony boy, I had ps and ps2, and i was introduced by Gamecube, Wind Waker was the main reason why i become a Nintendo fan, so it´s easy for me to understand you. At first I thought that  WiiU was the first bad console Nintendo ever made, that huge and heavy gamepad, that lack of games at the begining, that Mario that din´t feel so quite impressive as Galaxy... i didn´t want it because, I was playing on Pc to almost every great game ps3 and 360 had, but then i saw Mario Kart 8 and i just want it, there´s nothing on pc that can give so much fun as Mario Kart and 8 looks gorgeus, so I bought a WiiU...

Turns out the graphics were great, the gamepad light, not so big and very usefull, turns out Mario 3d World is and incredible mix between Super Mario World and Galaxy, also Pikmin 3 is just the most beautifull game i´ve ever played, Zombie U was actually good, Wonderfull 101 so fresh, and of course MM8 was even better than I expected, that online is just amazing. By now WiiU turns out to be one of my favourite consoles of all times, and i´m sure if has bad sales then it will become a cult console highly loved by fans and console collectors. I´m just so happy to have it seeing that gorgeus Zelda and Xenoblade between others (I LOVE YOSHI WOOLLY WORLD; WANT IT NOW) to come, and i think almost every wiiu owner is happy to own it. Glad to have you here!

While my original reason for a Wii U was just it being a new Nintendo console, I later learned of all of the other great features that helped justify my purchase. Off TV play is nice and the gamepad is helpful in games like Pikmin 3. Also, I'm new too but congrats on your first thread. Maybe I should make one sometime..

I really love off-screen play.

The problem with it, is that it is not such a big thing for the biggest world markets:
-USA: I remmember reading somewhere that in USA a big part of the population has at least 2 TVs.
-JAPAN: It could be a important thing here, but japan just gave up on consoles.
- LATAM/Emergent: The additional cost of the gamepad is multiplied by insane import taxes. While people here don't always have 2 TVs, they also have less discretionary income.

Again, i love the Pad, but it is not helping sales , IMO.
