Forums - Sony - Sony to buy out a big studio?

I've never heard that Level 5 was making any more DQ games. Besides Sony and L5 have a good relationship. Sony has published every single game they've done on PS2/P.

And Square doesn't own Level 5.

I know SE doesn't own Level 5. It just seems like they have a really good relationship right now.

Sony has published every Level 5 game on the PSP/ps2 except DQ games (well, just DQVIII), but every game that Level 5 makes for the DS (and there are quite a few more than on the PSP) are published by SE.

I also don't see why SE qould suddenly stop giving Level 5 DQ duties, unless they were indeed bought out by Sony.

But hey, I'd be all for a buy out. ^^

Given Sony's financial status this would have to be a move of desperation.

Apparently selling something is a sign of desperation, buying something is also one now.

Sorry Sony, you are screwed regardless. Better give up now.

My comment in Shams news post "Sony sells a EU HQ":

Sony sells a building = Haha Sony is so bankrupt (because of PS3) they needed the money!!

$next Week*

Sony buys a building = Haha Sony is so stupid they will be off the market faster!! Bye PS3!!

It is always the same on forums =p.

I think your wrong on this one. L5 published Layton in Japan and Nintendo published it in America. DQ 8 is the only L5 game I think Square published.

It seems you are correct. ^^

Well then, a Sony aquisition of Level 5 doesnt' seem all that unlikely anymore.  They have had a great working relationship in the past.

Listen, there is plenty of room for optimism now that things are going better for the PS3, but there is a limit. Saying Sony has the best games? Seriously. Cherry picking one reviewer over another to reafirm what you want to believe. Choosing Reviews period over profits or over the ranking of largest developers. The cherry picking needs to stop if you want to have threads like this and have them taken seriously. The constant belief that Ninty fanboys are out to get you needs to stop. You're just looking at the video game world with blinders on while chasing your tails.

If Sony is going to buy someone, it will be someone small as they have done in the past. That stands to reason. While they own large stakes in both Konami and Square its unlikely the company as a whole will pony up the cash just for the gaming division. And don't over-estimate how much Sony has staked in Blu-Ray either in your eagerness to believe they'll indiscriminately throw money at the PS3. Sony is 1 of 9 companies invested in Blu-Ray and with it the shoe in for the next format, they've no real incentive to keep floating the PS3 as its chariot when much cheaper Blu-Ray players are on the horizon.

^negative. Games sells consoles. The name of the game right now is to get the most games exclusive. 3rd parties are going multiplat. The best way of getting exclusives is to get a company.

This doesn't mean "oh my god we are shipwrecked!!!!! Let's do a last ditch effort and buy anything we can!!!!"

^if that's what it meant MS would have been under a while ago.

Negative?

Oh, I forgot this was the happy sunshine forum where reality is to be ignored in favor of making people, who own the console in question, happy.

Let's hope buying a company doesn't result in the talent jumping ship in the purchase. Sony isn't exactly an appealing parent company at the moment.

I think there are a number of small developers that with Sony's backing could make some great games. The trick is picking the underachieving developer with that potential.

I don't see why they would jump ship. Sony has bought many developers over the past few years (Zipper Interactive, Guerrilla Games, Evolution Studios, among others), none of which have had a mass exodus of employees after the fact.

And, from what I understand, Sony is quite an appealing company to work for.  Just ask the guys at Naughty Dog or  Sony Santa Monica.

Most developers that Sony acquires seem quite content to become a part of SCEWWS, as they can then work with other Sony studios to optimize engines, etc. and received great support from Sony higher ups, in the form of devkits, etc.  (though some receive this support while remaining independent, ala Insomniac).

Actually, the studios which Sony usually buys are those that they have already formed strong second party ties with, so it's not like they randomly buy studios that have no experience with Sony.

Even developers that do jump ship (like David Jaffe) usually stick around Sony in some form or another (Jaffe's new independent studio Eat Sleep Play develops only PlayStation exclusives).
