Forums - General - National Geographic: Animals are smarter than you think

Many of us know that other primates such as chimpanzees are intelligent and skilled toolmakers, and dolphins are famous for being smart as well, but this article discusses surprising levels of intelligence in creatures as varied as birds, sheep, and octopi.

One choice quote:  "Certain skills are considered key signs of higher mental abilities:  good memory, a grasp of grammar and symbols, self-awareness, understanding others' motives, imitating others, and being creative."  I can think of a few members (and several ex-members) who seemed to demonstrate only two or three of these.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.

I bought this edition! I think it is rather obvious however that animals are smart! However, they are smart in their own way and humans are in their way. Animals have developed themselves in other territories (parts of the brain)... Etc... They also use nature as opposed to humans who use technology.

THE NETHERLANDS

Dolphins and elephants especially are really smart.

Let's just say... We don't have to worry about them taking over anytime soon. ;)

Those were impressive skills, but a 2 yr old can do just the same. *shrugs*
