Of course they would want 1st place, but you seem to think if they don't get 1st place they shouldn't even bother though. |
If the difference is significant as current trends should suggest, then they certainly will consider calling it quits.
I think this thread says it best.

Xbox ones sales are outpacing xbox 360. So if Microsoft were happy, why, in an extremely unprecedented move for the console industry, have they reduced the price heavily, unbundled what once was a core feature (kinect) and given free games (via bundles or deals) almost within a few months, less than a year after the console launched.
If microsoft were happy, kinect would still be in the box, the console would be probably slighty cheaper than the initial $499 and they wouldnt have all these awesome deals.
The moves are direct responses to consistently being outsold. I could imagine if PS4 wasnt a threat, xbox one would now be $449 with kinect at best. But the reality is all these moves are because they are being outsold, and probably because of closed door meetings within some of the big guns within microsoft.
Phil spencer is a nice guy, and I genuinely believe he wants the best games on xbox for those who use it. But there are big wigs in microsoft who are only concerned about the finances, and potential finances that could be in their banks, but isn't.
