I didn't say that you were wrong. That's the nice thing about capitalism, it has spoiled us. Normally if companies are too stupid to predict demand, customers buy something from the competition. Until now it doesn't seem to hurt the Wii but the PS3 gets cheaper and great games this year and the 360 has most likely solved its quality problems. Nintendo should get its production into gear soon or they won't need the additional capacity anymore. ;-

400k a week? That's a very bold prediction. OK, in this week, I'm guessing 170-200k for NA and 60k for Japan. That's still only 350k a week in the best case scenario.

It's not a bold prediction at all, it's just a smart one. If this week sees 350k, next week will surely see much above 400k since Nintendo will release some stock for SSBB's launch. The average will most likely be above 400k.

I really don't think the PS3 or 360 matter too much, to people who have a Wii in mind. They're still gonna snap one up when they see it.

 

I dont' see the supply issue slacking up this year, honestly.

The more cool games are available for PS3/360 and the faster the PS3 (and 360) comes into Wii price range the less true this sentence is IMO.

If not Nintendo deserves to loose this generation. The moment the PS3 breaks the 300$ barrier the fight will get interesting, the more units Nintendo pushes out before that the better for them. (And I don't see how any company should be inept enough to not provide enough units after 2 years)

So, Wii finally will be available everywhere? =)

sigh a) vast majority of future wii owners don't care about what the 'cool games' are...and they won't consider a ps3 at all...this is the clear blue ocean that only the wii fishes in b) hardcore gamers are the target demo for ps360...the problem with this? that demo is also the one buying multiple consoles....that bloody red ocean c) when ps3 is still outsold at 300 will u then start saying 'wait for 200?' d) nintendo is making a ton of wiis, demand is just too high...since u are an expert, at which point are they making enough to not be blameworthy? theoretically if they made 5mil/month and still sold out would u blame them still?

LOL people don't buy the Wii because it is a paperweight. They buy it because it has games that appeal to them.

"are the target demo"? demographic perhaps? Anyway the PS3 will try to change this with LittleBigPlanet, Home, SingStar etc. pp. The casual gamer demographic is not married to the Wii.

I said it will get more interesting when the PS3 hits 300. Of course the Wii has a huge lead but when the PS3 reaches the casual market in price Nintendo needs to have any supply issues solved unless they want to loose out. 200 is of course another big step.

After 1-2 years? Of course. But luckily they do not have that problem. Europe seems to have no supply problems anymore.

a) many buy wii because of its controls/wii sports and figure out the games later...they don't go to game sites or compare how many aaa games each console has

b) dmo is short for demographic, as u were able to deduce...and ps3 won't change anything as long as it keeps those commercials and phrases like 'unleash the beast'...it is a console made for, and marketed to, gamers

c) so if they made 5 million/month, or over 2x the amount ANY console has ever done for any period of time, and still sold out due to the 300million demand level, u would still blame them for being 'too stupid to predict demand'...u need to learn something about business and supply chain management amongst others

d) little big planet, home, etc aren't gonna move the needle...and again, the sixaxis is a barrier to entry for 100s of millions of potential customers

True, on the other hand most people who pay 250$+ for something know what they are buying. (Parents excluded)

The same rhetoric didn't seem to hurt the PS2. And yes the Wii has good mindshare at the moment. In the end I think the fabled "casual gamer" is far less important than many here think. The number of playing grannies won't decide the race. In my opinion what really helps the Wii is the superior "multiplayer" experience. The 360/PS3 have too much emphasis on online gaming and completely ignore multiple people before the same console. (Motorstorm without splitscreen WTF). That's something the Wii excels at. On the other hand, that's something the competition can fix.

If you read what I wrote correctly, you will see that I acknowledge that they may make wrong predictions. But after 1-2 years you should be able to meet any demand. The chips/other technology they use are not so sophisticated that they couldn't scale supply up fast. That's the nice thing about capitalism you can get almost ANYTHING for money. Nintendo was just too scared to invest enough. Perhaps because this would lower their margins for each console sold or whatever.
