I'm going to add a qualifier to this hint:
Hint for #10:
The director and writer of this fourth-gen game, once a legend, is now something of a pariah, thanks to his recent work.

Bumping in for a random guess then. Final Fantasy IV? |
No, but you've got the right system.
10
Super Mario Bros. 3
System: Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo (SNES), GameBoy Advance
Genre: 2D Platformer
Year: 1991
Rank last year: 9 (v 1)
Late in the NES's life, and three years after it's release in Japan, came the system's swansong. Personally I played it first on Super Nintendo on the Super Mario All-Stars compilation cartridge and the remaster's port on the GameBoy Advance years later, but I own the original as well. The newer releases include a handy feature which allows the player to save their progress, which the NES release lacks. This makes the game needlessly hard and it's the reason why I prefer the newer versions.
Bringing the ability to save takes away the only obstacle the game has however, and the result is a game that takes the 2D platformer genre to near perfection. It features all the power-ups you'd want as a player, an airtight control-scheme and inspired level-design. It beats it's successor in every way possible and it's a way more fun game because of it. This is 2D Mario done right, what all Mario games should strive for.
With Super Mario Bros. 3 at #10, we've entered the Hall of Fame. #11 through #20 was like the 'Antechamber of Fame'...
Game #9
Game #9 has something to do with DK.
#10 - Dead Space
#9 - Save the princess, but not until youve beaten it twice. Third game in the series.

I don't know about the "being banned here" part (probably not), but... Red Dead Redemption? |
Doubtful, because Red Dead Redemption is the (spiritual) sequel to Red Dead Revolver.
Game #11 - Earthbound
Earthbound is a very unique game. At the time most RPGs were focused around a fantasy medieval setting and there's nothing wrong with that. Earthbound took a different route and based the setting around a more modern time and our heroes are kids who along with PSI use bats and yo-yos and bottle rockets to fight the army of the evil alien Giygas. The combat system is also a little different than your normal RPGs. Your health starts to number down after being hit by an attack instead of an instant subtraction therefore giving you time to heal if hit by a normally mortal blow. Also battles with weak enemies will automatically be skipped. Earthbound's biggest strengths are the great, lively and colourful graphics and the amazing writing. The graphics are some of the best on the Super Nintendo and to this day, is very clean and visually appealing. The writing is very well done, there is never a dull moment in Earthbound, a ton of careful was put in to make pretty much everything in the game that has a dialouge box to be interesting in some way or another. From the witty NPCs to the crazy things enemies will do in a battle to the satisfying SMAAAASSSSH! attack, it adds a certain charm that very few games can match.
