Final Fantasy VII (PS1, 1997)

guessed by TruckOSaurus

Originally slated for release on the SNES, Final Fantasy VII was pushed back for launch on N64. But when the storage space on the N64 cartridge was deemed insufficient, developer Square decided to release the game on Sony's Playstation. Thus began a decade of Sony exclusivity for Final Fantasy, and a decade of decline for Nintendo. So Final Fantasy VII had a big impact on the industry, but it had an ever larger impact on the public perception of RPGs. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to claim that FFVII was the first mainstream RPG -- it has sold 10 million copies, the most of any Final Fantasy game -- and was one of the first games to place a huge emphasis on story and production values. In fact, the game cost $45 million, the most expensive game of its time, and required a team of roughly 120 artists and programmers.

Hint for #31:

This game, the most expensive of its time, popularized a genre in the United States, even if the English localization was less than perfect.

Final Fantasy VII?

That's it!

Happy Holidays dudes. Clues for 35-31

35. 2nd game in series that has characters who take the form of a person from the given time period, similar to the TV show Quantum Leap.

34. The newest game on my list. Launch title for PS4 that received nearly universal acclaim for its naval battles.

33. Game that boasts something that many current games try to portray but fall short...genuine horror and fear. Based on a "snuff" film premise and made by a developer that is a household name due to another best selling series.

32. The first (and by far best) entry in a sports series that gave birth to the gamebreaker and "Stretch".

31. The first 16-bit installment in the series where usage of secondary weapons causes hearts to deplete. Makes double and triple shot handy.

I guess we had it pretty good here in the States, all things considered.

34. I'm guessing Assassins Creed: Black Flag

#31- The Legend of Zelda:  A Link to the Past

After Zelda II, Nintendo went back to the original formula for their third game on the new SNES. Link to the Past to me felt like everything the original Zelda wanted to be.  More fluid movement and combat, more variety in the environments and a deeper story. The music, excellent like always. In the first two Zelda games I felt more like an adventurer but now for the first time I felt like a hero. For a 1992 release, Link to the Past still looks great thanks to the excellent spirte work. The game is packed with content too. Along with just the normal dungeon to dungeon gameplay the game encourages you to explore the world to find hidden items and weapons to aid you on your quest, along with some minigames to break up the action. The dungeons too are designed very well, some of the best in the series, and the key to beating the bosses is not always just using the item from that specific dungeon. The bosses are also creative, fun and I think take good advantage of the new hardware.

Hint #30. This game follows a new angle on the same story.

Additional hint: The setting of this game shares it's name with a 7th gen game published by Warner.

Now for the #31 hint:

Beating this sequel on the hardest difficulty granted you a different ending, where someone who supposedly dies manages to live.

Max Payne 2.

Dead on Arrival was hard indeed.
