It seems leftist and rightist are in a stand off now over Columbian ground forces (rightist) crossed in to Ecuador (leftist) to kill a leftist FARC rebel leader. Venezuela and Ecuador are talking tough, as they move troops to the Columbian border.

Tell us what you think.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

this wont lead to nothing. Just some stupid showmanship.

However, Columbia nwas wrong to violate international borders.

Colombia shouldn't have violated the borders, of course.

Regarding Venezuelan troops moving to the border, Chavez is just putting his balls on the table as most dictators do. Closing the embassy is a bit more serious though, I wonder for how long he plans to keep it that way (I'm guessing not long).

It's not that simple, regional and world powers violate borders quite frequently. It's Columbia pulling it's unilateral military action against terrorism card.

  • The US and Russia go into other countries all the time.
  • UN norms of international law have shown that they won't act when incursions are done in the name of (edit: anti-)terrorism.
  • The UK, Germany and the US all backed Isreal when they bombed Beruit.
  • Turkey is currently deployed in Northern Iraq fighting Kurdish Rebel-Terrorists.
  • African Union deployed in Sudan against the will of the Sudanese Gov't.
Will it be a traditional war? Probably not, but will it lead to more Ecuadorian and Venezuelan support for rebels? Most definitely.

"Colombia shouldn't have violated the borders, of course."

You are bordered on a country that harbors terrorists that come over into your country like they please and can go back without fear of retaliation. Real terrorists that hold 700 people hostage and almost wrecked your country? With a jungle border you cannot secure.

I can understand the Colombian commander and Chavez is the biggest hypocrite around. The "internation law" way would be to officially complain at the Ecuadorian embassy about these incursions and to declare war after they didn't do anything about the problem. Don't know if this would be better.
